OTTAWA - Prime Minister Stephen Harper is a possible "special guest" at a major Conservative social gathering Sunday at Senator Gerry St. Germain's 28-hectare ranch in South Surrey, B.C.
St. Germain said Wednesday he invited both Harper and the prime minister's wife Laureen to his annual barbecue that will bring together B.C. Tory MPs, candidates and party volunteers. "I hope they are going to be there," said St. Germain, whose invitation to grass-roots Tories promises that "many special guests will be in attendance."
Carolyn Stewart Olsen, Harper's press secretary, wrote in an e-mail that a B.C. visit this weekend is "still not confirmed."
Harper's visit would come amid some Tory popularity slippage on the West Coast as the government struggles with Middle East turmoil and criticism of the proposed softwood lumber truce with the U.S.
