Harper down to 32% in Decima poll
Conservatives lose ground amid perceived sidling up to U.S. on Mideast: poll

OTTAWA (CP) - A new poll suggests Tory support is sliding over voter concern that Canada has become too cozy with the United States on Middle East policy.

The Tories had 32 per cent support compared with 31 per cent for the Liberals and 16 per cent for the New Democrats.

But the Liberals widened their Ontario lead to 42 per cent of voter support compared with 33 per cent for the Conservatives, and have pulled in front of the Tories in Quebec for the first time since last winter's campaign.

"When we look at the combination of the alignment of the government with the current U.S. administration policy on the Middle East - and in particular with respect to the Lebanon-Israel conflict - it's reasonable to assume it's one of the factors that's driving Conservative support down in the near term," said Decima CEO Bruce Anderson.

3. OK, I am gobsmacked
Not by the result, but by the fact the result is being given some press. I am on the record as being leery about polling bias, so I will admit to some happy surprise on this one.

4. As the resident polling non-skeptic here...
I am delighted with these results, and I hope they hold up, but I would urge folks not to get too cocky. The Tories are still only seven or eight points away from a majority, and much will happen before the next election.

Having said that, it is really encouraging to see that Canadians are apparently not willing to journey with Harper down the Bushian road to total fucked-up war.

5. Great news

and a good opportunity for the Liberals to reinvent themselves.

That said, I've bowed out of volunteering....will only do so if Ignatieff doesn't win the leadership convention.(and I told them as much)

Fingers crossed for Kennedy or Dryden!

7. Better contribute if it's Dryden you want.
Dryden lays off staff to continue leadership bid

TORONTO — In a significant belt-tightening move, Toronto MP Ken Dryden's campaign for the federal Liberal leadership has had to lay off staff.

"Well, the campaign is not out of money but we did have some layoffs last week,'' Dryden, considered one of the most progressive candidates in the field, told the Toronto Star Monday night.

"It's the kind of experience that all of us (leadership candidates) are going through.''

8. I'll do what I can....
I hope I can persuade people I know to vote when it comes down to it as most of the people I know don't vote...

9. The Tories are going to get drubbed in Quebec...
I'd rather see the support go to the NDP or the BQ than to the Liberals though...

But that would be expecting a lot from a province where 96% of the population prefers the Parti Quebecoke, the Fibranos, or the Action Duplessiste to the progressive Quebec Solidaire.
