Oh, my God, I know Captain Trevor Greene.

I didn't know the name of the Canadian soldier attacked with an axe in Afghanistan this past weekend until I heard it on CBC radio this morning just as I was ramping onto the highway.

I worked with him for almost the better part of a year at a dot-com in 2000. I didn't get to know him really well, but our respective jobs overlapped now and then, and it was always a pleasure to work with him. He was so genuine and decent.

Any time I've signed off a post with "Cheers," I've thought of him, because his version of goodbye was "Cheers, mate!"

The injuries were severe, but I'm praying he makes a full recovery.

Edit to add photo and also to mention that Trevor also wrote "Bad Date," the first book about the prostitutes who went missing in Vancouver's Downtown East Side.

1. It certainly brings it home even more strongly when one knows an
injured or killed soldier. I fear there will be many more now that the Canadian mission has changed.

The outlook is improving for a Canadian soldier who underwent surgery on Monday after being ambushed with an axe blow to the head in Afghanistan, a military doctor says.

Doctors operated on Capt. Trevor Greene at the U.S. military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany on Monday.

Maj. Nick Withers, a Canadian medical officer at the hospital, said Greene's surgery "went extremely well" and he was in intensive care in a medically induced coma.

"His condition has stabilized but he remains in critical condition, but we're much happier than we were eight hours ago," Withers said.

4. Thanks so much, CHIMO. That's great news.
This is bothering me a lot more than I would've expected.
