2. Canadian officer hurt in axe attack
The meeting was one in a series for the platoon based at a forward staging camp about 60 kilometres north of Kandahar.

Greene, Schamuhn and a security detail were meeting with local elders to talk about possible reconstruction projects when the attack took place.

The two officers removed their helmets and set down their arms as a gesture of trust for elders who traditionally guarantee security at such meetings, known as shura.

“We were completely vulnerable to them and they took complete advantage of that,” Schamuhn said.

A CBC radio broadcast said that it appeared to be a setup. Looked for the transcript but haven't been able to find it. Said that the children had been quietly removed from the meeting shortly before the attack.

A second Canadian soldier has died of injuries incurred when an armoured vehicle rolled over in Afghanistan, the military says.

Master Cpl. Timothy Wilson of Grande Prairie, Alta., died early Sunday morning, Canadian military officials told a news conference at the main Canadian base in Kandahar.

Wilson was being treated at a U.S.-run hospital in the German city of Landstuhl.

Cpl. Paul Davis, 28, of Bridgwater, N.S., died on Thursday after the vehicle carrying Canadian troops crashed into a taxi and flipped during a routine patrol near Kandahar.
