Why doesn't WI have auto proof of insurance?
MY wife's truck got smacked last night by an uninsured idiot. This marks the 4th time in a little over a year my vehicles have been struck by uninsured motorists. Why doesn't WI have a proof of insurance law?I'm really sick of people hitting my vehicles and my insurance goes up.It sucks!

1. Actually
the driver can (and probably will) be cited.

Your "Uninsured Motorist" coverage should help.

2. But even so -
There are plenty of states that won't issue license or plate renewal, unless you provide proof of insurance. It actually helps keep the overall insurance rates lower (at least, it did in NC). I'm surprised this hasn't come up before the state yet.

4. I think Wisconsin "requires" financial responsibility but
does not require proof of it for most drivers. People that have had their licenses revoked may have to actually come up with proof in order to get a license back in some cases.

7. We do require proof of financial responsibility
Under Chapter 344 of the statutes. It is in line with the minimums for an uninsured motorist policy at $25,000/$50,000/$10,000.

I don't know why it is not a straight compulsory insurance requirement though.

8. Then the DOT should enforce it.
What's the point in having a law, if people can simply ignore it? Why does someone involved in an accident with that person sees their insurance rates raised because they were hit by an uninsured motorist??

9. Even worse: people driving without licenses
Last place I worked it was required to hold a valid regular license in order to have a job driving a forklift. We needed another forklift driver on second shift, so the plant superindentant stood outside the employee parking lot before shift change and wrote down names of the guys driving to work. He had a list of 15 names, then he went to work.

This was the typical conversation:
Boss: "Hi. How would you like to drive forklift instead of doing what you do now?"
Employee: "YES!"
Boss: "Do you have a drivers license?"
Employee: "NO!"

Turns out only 1 of the 15 had a valid license.

12. A lot of those guys probably had them suspended.
Where I come from, DUI's are almost like a badge of honor, the more you have the more certian people are impressed with you.

13. Could be
This place I worked, a fair number of employee paychecks were cashed at taverns instead of banks/credit unions. We could tell when the checks returned.

Keep in mind Gizmo, this is the Milwaukee inner-city. I wouldn't think things would be as bad in Sheboygan.
