Well, they did the statewide Tornado drill.
Those of us in the Comm building at UWSP got no warning at all.

We just went on with class as usual while everyone else practiced what to do if a twister comes bearing down on Stevens Point.

:sarcasm:

As a student who practically lives in the comm building, This really inspires confidence.

1. We just had an earthquake drill (Washington)
They read from a script and we're supposed to go under our desks. Unfortunately, it was marred by my co-workers all laughing heartily at the descriptions of what was going on ("the air is full of choking dust....it's been 20 seconds...your computer monitor falls off your desk....the building is still shaking....)

2. Couldn't hear any sirens huh?
I know I've never been able to hear them from my house (in MN) but sure heard the downtown ones from my office just now. Hopefully your bldg is in an area that doesn't usually get hit, like my house is. Of course, just because there has never been anything worse than straight line winds in a certain area is no assurance a twister will never happen.

6. They were supposed to make an annoucement over the UWSP PA system...
However, since the Comm building at UWSP is so freaking old, it isn't hooked up to the University PA system.

3. In the basement of the Eau Claire State Office Bldg just now
Where we were hiding from the nonexistent tornado we found a deck of cards on a table in the break room down there & I won $0.15 in the impromptu poker game.

4. Now that's making lemonade
Of course that isn't to say a phony tornado drill is the philosophical equivalent of lemons. I always thought they were more like "recess," though relatively brief.

15. Hi Melanie.
How'd you like the Chip Co. JJ dinner? Wish we'd gotten more of a chance to talk.

17. Hi, Jim. The dinner was very nicely done!
I have my raffle tickets, I put in a silent bid on a hand knit scarf and won, the food was excellent and Stan Gruzynski, what can I say, I'm a groupie of his since my first Fighting Bob Fest. It didn't disappoint me at all that Peg Lautenschlager couldn't make it.

I asked Stan if he'd be interested in speaking at the Clark County Annual dinner and he gave me his card. :loveya: If I can't get him there this year, perhaps next.

Hopefully it was a fine fundraiser for Chip Co. Dems and they can keep the office open year round.

7. 25 yr later I still HATE hearing those sirens
Grew up in tornado land, hearing those air-raid-tornado sirens regularly. Was at a friends house a few yrs ago, had a PBS bad weather program on her tv. I made her turn the sound down because the sirens still give me the creeps, 25 yrs later. ooooOOOOooooOOOOoooOOOOOOooooOOOOOOooooo yuck shiver

8. I don't blame you
I was on the local Red Cross Board of Directors when a tornado ripped up a small town about 9 miles away. I went over with some of the disaster relief troops....

the destruction scared the crap out of me....

two years ago, the sirens went off and my son and I went out into the rain to see what was going on.....the rain was coming down hard and we heard the rumbling overhead...it was a "rain-wrapped" funnel cloud that never touched down...I was too scared to move....

the sirens still send a cold chill up my spine....

11. I see
You're some of THOSE people. Actually, those storms intrigue the heck out of me. I love to sit outside in the summer, under my big tin awning, when it's thundering and pouring. Get's pretty exciting sometimes.

13. Was taking a final exam once
when the sirens went off. Twenty sections spread throughout campus taking the same exam, so we couldn't cancel or postpone. Went to the basement and finished up there, all spread out on the hallway floor.
