When our kids were small, we had a will drawn up for the purpose of establishing custody of our little ones in the event both of us died. I couldn't help but invision a huge family squabble between my parents and my hubby's parents and we thought that it was the last thing our young children should have to deal with upon the loss of their parents. For the very same reason, we had living wills drawn up at the same time.
Family members will inevitably clash over how things should be done if you become incapacitated or die. There isn't much you can do to prevent it. At least a will gives you a chance to have a say in it. It doesn't cost that much to have a lawyer do the work for you and it insures that the things that are important to you are handled the way you want them to be.
You can do it yourself, but our lawyer came up with a few things to include that we wouldn't have thought of on our own. This is one area where he was worth his salt and that is why I would recommend hiring a professional to help.
