Lawmaker says if Ho-Chunk doesn't make payments, Doyle should shut down casinos

MADISON — The Republican co-chairman of the Legislature's budget-writing committee called Tuesday for Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle to shut down Ho-Chunk Nation casinos if the tribe doesn't make gaming revenue payments to the state.

The tribe owes the state $60 million — two years of payments — by June 30 under the terms of a compact worked out with Doyle, said state Rep. Dean Kaufert, R-Neenah.

The tribe had agreed to $30 million a year in payments because it was going to be allowed to add games such as poker, craps and roulette under the terms of a compact that had no expiration date, said spokeswoman Tracy Littlejohn.

The tribe is not offering those games, however, because the state Supreme Court ruled early last year that Doyle exceeded his authority in a similar deal with the Potawatomi tribe. The ruling sent 10 of the state's 11 federally recognized tribes, including the Ho-Chunk, back to the negotiating table with Doyle.

So the pukes had a cow when Doyle negotiated the compacts and sued in court to have them voided. Now that they are no longer in effect, they still want the payments? What jackasses!
