La Crosse - The Republicans hoping to unseat U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) come November said at a party-sponsored debate Saturday that the two-term incumbent's iconoclasm was more a burden than a virtue for Wisconsin voters.
"Does Wisconsin and the people here want someone that prides himself so strongly on being an independent maverick or would they elect someone that wants to get something done?" asked Russ Darrow.
The West Bend car dealer has made the case that campaign finance reform pushed through by Feingold and U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has been part of ploy to get national attention. The three other Republicans, too, sought to neutralize the appeal of Feingold's independence.
"There's a difference between being a good independent and being a little bit on the defiant side just for political grandstanding," said Bear Creek lawyer Robert Gerald Lorge.

So the worst skeletons they could pull from his closet are campaign finance reform and the fact that he actually has a spine. This may turn out to be a very entertaining political massacre. So far, they appear to be quite inept.
