Modify student I.D.? In what way are these I.D.'s going to be modified?
Anyone understand this? Thanks....

"To make sure students aren't denied the right to vote, the University of Wisconsin administration must modify student ID cards to comply with the voter photo ID law recently signed by Governor Scott Walker.

Currently, UW ID cards lack the signature and expiration date necessary to make them valid as voter IDs. If the administration modified the cards to include a signature and expiration date, students would easily be able to vote in the spring 2012 elections and in next year's presidential election.

It is vitally important that our young people have the opportunity to vote. That's why we created a petition to UW-Madison Interim Chancellor David Ward on SignOn.org, which says:

Modify University of Wisconsin ID cards to comply with the 2011 Wisconsin Act 23, commonly known as the voter ID law.

Will you sign the petition? Click here to add your name, and then pass it along to your friends:

Thanks!

The reason I ask and wonder is why not just collect signitures to prevent this poll tax, new voter I.D. law" from being used in the first place... Ohio is doing it...

3. I don't think we have that law in Wisconsin
Ohio law allows voters to sign a petition against a law passed by the legislature, and if enough signatures are collected the law does not go into effect until the next election, at which time voters can approve it or not. Obviously it can't be used for every piece of legislation because the number of signatures required is high, but this seems like a useful tool in case of severe overreaching. On the other hand, we can recall our officials. Many states can't.

4. The plan was to put a sticker on each student ID
Issuing new ID cards to all those students would cost heaps of money. The GAB approved the sticker idea because their general position is that every eligible person should be able to vote. What an idea! The Republicans were going to try to block the sticker. I haven't heard what came of it.
