Wisconsin Supreme Kangaroo Court: A promise to work together ~ Prosser is skeptical
Justices pledge to work together while tensions are still evident
Plan for relationship consultant voted down
By Patrick Marley of the Journal Sentinel
Sept. 28, 2011

Madison - State Supreme Court justices said Wednesday they were committed to working collegially as they try to improve relations after a physical altercation between two justices, but tensions continued to simmer.

The pledge to work together came just after four of the seven justices voted down a proposal to have the court work with a consultant to improve their relationship. The four - Justices Michael Gableman, David Prosser, Patience Roggensack and Annette Ziegler - said they opposed discussing such an idea in public because they considered it a personnel matter that should remain private.

Voting for the proposal were Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson and Justices Ann Walsh Bradley and N. Patrick Crooks.

Abrahamson earlier this month proposed a dozen ideas on how the court could change after a sheriff's investigation into a physical altercation between Prosser and Bradley. No one was charged in that incident, in which Bradley confronted Prosser face-to-face, and he put his hands on her neck in what he called a reflexive response.

Justice denied is corruption personified

2. David Prosser has a problem with civility
David Prosser has a problem with civility

Justice David Prosser admits to having verbally abused the chief justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court. He acknowledges that, in one of his frequent fits of anger, he grabbed another justice around the neck.

Justice Prosser’s targets are women. And he makes no apologies.

Prosser’s fellow justices acknowledge that he would be well served by anger-management counseling and other interventions designed to help troubled individuals.

But Prosser refuses.

Indeed, he even objects to efforts to bring a measure of civility to the high court.

When justices announced this week that they were committed to working together collegially, Prosser complained about the initiative and backed it only grudgingly. When the vote on whether to issue the statement came, the other six justices — conservatives and liberals — raised their hands immediately.

Before finally going along with it, Prosser hesitated and complained that the statement was “nice sounding, but somewhat meaningless.”

In Prosser’s case, that may be true.

Thankfully, the rest of the court is trying to ease the tension and disarray that Prosser has fostered.

It may be true that the court will remain dysfunctional for so long as Prosser sits on it.

But the other justices are to be commended for at least making an effort to address the court’s “Prosser problem.”
