A health insurance company affiliated with the state's largest teachers union today demanded conservative talk-show host Mark Belling stop accusing the company of "racketeering" and apologize for making that charge in the past.
Officials with WEA Trust said Belling has repeatedly said the insurer transfers its "profits" to the Wisconsin Education Association Council, something that would be illegal under state and federal law.
The insurer's lawyer said the company is ready to sue if Belling does not "cease and desist" from making this claim.
"WEA Trust will pursue legal remedies, however, should you continue to falsely tell your listeners that it is owned by WEAC or provides funding for WEAC's political and union activities," wrote Robert Dreps of Godfrey & Kahn. The Journal Sentinel has hired Dreps to handle free-press issues in the past.
Belling, whose show airs daily beginning at 3 p.m. on WISN-AM (1130), did not immediately respond to a message.
The head of WEA Trust called Belling's comments "false and defamatory."
