"I normalling vote Dem.. but teachers' union has gotten out of control"
My 4th WE canvasing for Sandy Pasch...

Had a sane talk w/a married home owner (average income) in Glendale WI
this afternoon (no kids, 40s). His position:

> I normally vote democratic, I have sympathy for the teachers
> losing their collective bargining rights, but teacher's unions
> have gotten "out of hand". My prop taxes are outrageously high,
> "I'm being eaten alive".

He believes in unions, but thinks the teacher's union
has to be reeled in. He asserts thta he is paying more in
taxes than parents (they get tax deduction for kids).
Bottom line

He seems to be against vouchers, against the environmental roll
backs, against across the board privatization. He is ok w/paying
for schools (fo the "common good") even though he has no kids,
but is convinced that the teachers Union needed to be brough under
control; that his taxes are out of line.

--
He claims that the Union still has the right to bargin over wages,
through a 3rd party arbitrator - is that true?

1. My third weekend doing this for Sandy, I had a great day
...canvassing in WFB not far from Sendik's. I couldn't even recite the script most of the time, everyone was so excited about getting out to vote on Tuesday. I heard lots of thank-yous. If that neighborhood's any indication I don't think we'll have a problem with turnout.

I'm surprised this guy was on our list, since they're sending us to talk to our 1's and 2's this weekend...

2. No, Unions have lost all power
The can "sit at the table" like Alberta Darling says but they will have no input. Does this guy actually think the teacher's Union is totally responsible for his tax increase? I think people strike out at the Union as it is the only thing they have any control over. They sure have no control over corporations.

4. Hmm... Having schools that are well funded increase property values....
Good Schools Mean High Property Values
It's supposed to be a buyer's market. Yet, for parents determined to buy in areas associated with top schools, those bargains may be harder to come by. When housing markets go south, "areas with exceptional schools tend to hold their value better than the market overall," says Michael Sklarz, president of Collateral Analytics

Parent's get a measly 1000 per child tax credit.. It costs approximately 230,000 to raise a child in America.. I'm sure parent's are paying more in taxes than non parents... But let's just say they aren't... Why don't we just let voters like this become aware of them paying more taxes than G.E. here in Wisconsin and see how they like that....

I've not heard about the third party arbitration thing.
I bet Brian Kennedy would know.... He is in that area... http://www.politifact.com/wisconsin/statements/2010/dec/12/bryan-kennedy/union-leader-says-wisconsin-state-employees-earn-a/
