I am fuming
Racial fears seen as part of Best Buy opposition
Fox Point residents say store would draw traffic from outside suburb
By TOM DAYKIN

*snip*

Fox Point - What seemed like a routine matter when a Best Buy store was proposed for RiverPoint Village Shopping Center has ignited a debate over what type of retailers - and shoppers - should be welcome in this affluent North Shore suburb.

"I believe that they've made it very clear they don't want people coming to Fox Point from other parts of town," said Ned Brickman, whose partnership owns RiverPoint. "They are worried about Northridge and Best Buy's clientele at Northridge."

Asked whether she believed some residents are motivated by racial fears, Village Board member Louise Petering replied, "That probably is the case. I can't say for 100 percent sure. Their comments were somewhat veiled, I think."

this is the shit that really threw me off:

Fox Point resident Linda Settler said Best Buy would attract customers who would bring crime, making RiverPoint an unsafe hangout for her children, ages 12 and 16.

"These people have no stake in my community," Settler said in an interview.

When asked whether she was referring to blacks, Settler said, it's "people from other communities who don't have the same socioeconomic status as we do."

If Best Buy closes the Northridge-area store, there will be "an element" at RiverPoint that people won't like, Fox Point resident Bob Cory said.

"Those people are going to come in here to take a look at Best Buy," Cory said during the July 13 board meeting. "Then they're going to shoplift someplace else."

these people? what the fuck is this? god i'm shouting at my computer. racist fucking idiots.

1. Do a ltte and ask for input as to who "those people" might be
perhaps they don't want
Jews
poor people
blacks
Hispanics
Asians
Christians
French
get it. Make up a list and try to force the racists bastards to respond with specifics. Flush them out and hit em with a big stick.

2. I've read some elitist racist crap lately, but I think that this about
takes the cake. It's appalling that people like that woman have the nerve and gall to say things like that publically without any fear of being called the racist, elitist, ugly speciman that they are.

I just feel so sorry for my poor country. Whatever happened to human decency and concern for the poor and weak? Because that's how we will truly be judged in the end (I believe). Where do these people get their exaggerated ideas of their own importance? There is something truly wrong with the 'soul' of America when the situation degenerates so badly that people can object to the opening of a Best Buy because they are afraid that undesirable elements may come to the store to buy.

When asked whether she was referring to blacks, Settler said, it's "people from other communities who don't have the same socioeconomic status as we do."

I don't know what to say about her social status, and obviously she's of the mistaken belief that money determines a person's worth. But I think it's safe to say that as far as the evolutionary ladder, this creature is down there on the bottom rung.

5. No vigilantism or terrorism against free speech, please.
Even when it is speech that you detest, the answer is more speech, not vigilantism or terrorism.

Please don't do this again.

6. I never thought of Best Buy as a seedy place
Yes, we have to fear people coming to town to buy appliances, electronics, and entertainment media. Is there something that I am missing? As long as there doesn't become a big loitering problem, I don't see why it would be unsafe for anyone. Maybe, the woman who is concerned with her teenagers should not encourage them to loiter anyway.

8. It's not bad at all
We shop occasionally at the very same Best Buy store that they are talking about moving. All kinds of people go there, and it's just a normal store with no obvious problems. This is a lot of crap. Now, we have also shopped at the now-closed grocery store in Fox Point where the Best Buy would be moving, and the Borders next door, and the people you see there do seem rather upscale. It wouldn't hurt them to see some regular people for a change. Or am I unfairly stereotyping them?

By the way, the current store is across the street from a nice mall that lost patronage and closed because too many white people seemed to think that too many black people were going there. (It didn't help that a white guy murdered his wife in the parking lot one night after setting up the scenario to blame some nonexistant blacks.) Our (white) family shopped there happily and were disappointed to lose the convenience. That was a perfectly good mall and it was a real shame to see it go.

9. I blogged about this today...
Stupid crap.
I grew up in an area similar to Fox Point, where everyone was "I work with a very nice black woman so I can't possibly be racist."
