I was with the group signing up volunteers and found myself with those at the end of the line, which stretched almost to Juneau. Those people were really dedicated, knowing that the park would probably be full before they got near it. I signed up 85 new volunteers, and if the others did the same, that would be about 1300 altogether. Many, many more said they were already signed up or would be when they returned to wherever they were from (Chicago, Florida, Madison, Fond du Lac, etc.). It was a long time to stand around, but everybody was glad to be there and didn't seem to mind.
On the way back to the parking structure, I happened to come upon a small crowd waiting for the motorcade to leave. A few guys in Bush/Cheney shirts came along, and I thought, uh-oh, so I asked if they were going to start something. One said, "No, I just want to go home." And they did. They got a fair amount of mention in the paper, but the comparison with the huge number of Kerry supporters was so obvious.
And it felt great to wave to Teresa as they sped off!
