Mess with your fundie-hugging legislator this holiday season
Edited on Mon Dec-12-05 06:50 AM by sybylla
Last Wednesday, 13 state senators and 33 assemblypersons showed their utter lack of comprehension of our constitution and separation of church and state when they signed a letter to Governor Doyle asking that he restore the name of the tree in the capitol rotunda to "Christmas Tree" rather than "Holiday Tree" as it is currently called. Not only is this a waste of our legislator's time but also would bring down upon the state an expensive lawsuit that it would not win and in fact was the reason the name was changed in the first place during the Thompson administration. Of course we all recognize that the true effort behind this letter is to tarnish Governor Doyle on the eve of an election year with something over which he has had no role in.

You can view the PDF press release here: http://www.thewheelerreport.com/releases/Dec05/Dec8/1208moultonxmastree.pdf

Now apparently if they don't get separation church and state by now, they never will so you might want to consider playing the game their way and messing with their little closed-minded, hatefilled heads. It is a fact that God dislikes christmas trees as the product of heathens, according to Jeremiah.

"Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. . . . They are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities." (Jeremiah 10:2-8)

So rather than sending the following clueless officials, including a Dem or two, another erudite reminder of separation of church and state, consider sending them the quote from Jeremiah and asking them to keep their hands off our Christmas. For added effect, I may personally add that if they want to do something productive, see what they can do to get rid of that heathen holiday, Halloween.

I think this could even make a fine letter to the editor in response to the fundies whining about how the holidays aren't religious enough. Time for a dose of their own medicine.

Oh, and if your legislators dare to tell you how to be a Christian, be sure to share that with the DPW and your local newspaper. Whether or not your rep is a Dem, I'm sure the DPW will share this with the Dem candidate in the district.
