Capito says she won't run against Byrd (12:26 pm)

West Virginia GOP Rep. Shelley Moore Capito announced Monday she will not challenge U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd in 2006.
The 2nd District congresswoman said she will seek a fourth term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

"If circumstances were to change and the environment were to change, then people might say they want to see me in a different role,'' Capito said.

"But I took a lot of time with this decision. My best future right now is to ask voters to send me back to my seat in Congress. I feel I've been very effective there, and there's more to be done.''

Byrd announced last week he would seek a record ninth term in the Senate. The 87-year-old Democrat said he was "ready to go another round.''

Capito, the 51-year-old daughter of former congressman and three-term GOP governor Arch A. Moore Jr., was viewed as the Republicans' best hope of unseating Byrd next year.

1. Queen Ugly Ass backs off, to wait like a buzzard, on Byrd's job!
Should have been the headline... Shellie the Slack Jawed Yokelette, knew she would be toast. I'll bet the RNC knew it was a lost cause, from the get-go and they finally told Queen Shellie to back off. She's ugly enough to be a GOPer pResident!

2. Too bad
I would have enjoyed seeing Bobby Byrd smack her around. Probably a smart move on her part. I think she's going to have trouble hanging onto the House seat she has.

3. I would have enjoyed watching the GOP uselessly pour
valuable resources into the fruitless attempt at getting the seat. Instead they'll concentrate those funds on other, more vulnerable, targets.
