they toned it down and took out ed's oxycontin jab at rush

As host of the Ed Schultz Show on 930 WRVC weekdays from 3-6 p.m., I appreciate the opportunity to respond to a recent guest editorial by Mark A. Caserta, who delivered a brief if inaccurate treatise on talk radio in the Tri-State area.
One of the reasons I appreciate this format of give and take on the editorial page of this newspaper is that in many ways it reflects the philosophy of my show, which is why we say the Ed Schultz Show is where America comes to talk. It is. But, Mr. Caserta stated that my callers are pre-screened. He got that wrong.
Our show is a rarity. I take the callers cold. I don't know the topic. I don't know if the caller is friend or foe. I press the button, and sometimes all hell breaks loose. But most of the time we have engaging discussions about the shape and direction of this country, because deep down, whether we agree or not, I know my listeners and I share one passion. We all want what is best for America.
There is one exception in regard to pre-screening. Since I had popular regional talk show for 25 years in North Dakota, I had plenty of time to accumulate legions of supporters and detractors. I don't require worshipful calls from those longtime listeners, nor is it fair for my national audience to endure an inordinate number of orchestrated hate calls from a small localized segment of the population. Still, we regularly let the provocateurs through, just so I can clean their clocks (after all,
I am secure in my philosophy and I like a good scrap), but in the long run too much of that is just not good radio
