Seattle Times: Gay partnership referendum makes ballot
OLYMPIA, Wash. —
Expanded domestic partnerships for same-sex couples could face a public vote after Washington officials ruled that referendum sponsors have enough voter support to force a referendum on the November ballot.

The new partnership law, nicknamed "everything but marriage" by its supporters, would broaden domestic partnerships by granting gay and lesbian couples all the remaining state-provided benefits that presently apply only to married heterosexual couples.

After a month of counting petition signatures, the secretary of state's office said that Referendum 71 had 121,617 valid signatures — nearly a thousand more than needed to advance to the general election.

1. I just got this from CREDO:
CREDO Action | more than a network. a movement.

Dear **********

We made an error in the email we just sent you. The ballot process in Washington is confusing, so we wanted to make sure to get it right. Voting to APPROVE Referendum 71 will preserve domestic partner benefits in Washington.

Here is a note from our friends at Fuse Washington:

"It's a little surprising to some people that we need to vote "approve" on a referendum the radical right collected signatures to qualify. Referenda always ask the same question in Washington State: should a law be approved or rejected? Since we want to keep the domestic partnership law adopted by the legislature, we must vote approve on Referendum 71."

We apologize for any confusion caused by this error, but it goes to show the work we have ahead of us on this important campaign.

I didn't know that about referenda.
