1. Update: found a photo

TACOMA -- Emergency crews are responding to a major explosion at the Atlas Foundry.

Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said officials began receiving 911 calls about the explosion, which unleashed a huge fireball, around 3 p.m.

People miles away from the foundry felt the shakes from the explosion, Fulghum said.

<more, but not much more>

Too soon yet for much detail. I hope the factory was empty today, that's all.

http://www.thenewstribune.com/news/breaking/story/172974.html

Multiple explosions at Tacoma's Atlas Foundry this afternoon sent flames two stories high over the Nalley Valley business. Employees at the company reported a fireball 800 to 1,000 feet tall in the second explosion.

Atlas Foundry Director of Safety Evid Owen said at 3:25 p.m. he thinks that a propane tank being filled exploded. Another tank was on fire and a third was expected to explode. Owen said he didn't know the condition of the propane truck driver.

it is not a populated area--mostly warehouses and manufacturing businesses.

TACOMA -- Emergency crews are responding to a major explosion at the Atlas Foundry.

Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said officials began receiving 911 calls around 3 p.m. about the explosion, which shot a huge fireball some 500 feet up in the air.

People miles away from the foundry felt the shakes from the explosion, Fulghum said.

One witness at the scene told KOMO 4 News the explosion had damaged adjacent buildings within a five-mile radius of the foundry. Another caller said he heard the explosion while in Graham, Wash.

Emergency crews are responding to the scene. It is not known whether anyone was injured.

The cause is not yet known.

The incident has triggered several road closures in the area. The southbound lanes of Interstate 5 are closed, just north of the exit to westbound State Route 16. Northbound I-5 traffic is stopped at 38th Street and eastbound SR 16 traffic is stopped at Union Avenue.

It was a thick, black, fountain of smoke. Then when I got home it was on the news.

15. The media is reporting 4 injured
No deaths as of yet. Incredible. One was airlifted, though. They don't do that for scraped knees, if you know what I mean.

<snip>

Three workers were taken to St. Joseph Hospital. Two suffered leg injuries and a third suffered facial burns. All three were said to be in stable condition.

A fourth worker with the most serious injuries was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center. The extent of his injuries and condition are not known.
