GOTV events 2007
If one of your candidates has something similar planned, please post here. Thanks.
--------------

The August 21 primary is now only two weeks away. With the primary being held a month earlier than usual, the turnout is likely to be very low. Anything we can do to encourage our supporters to remember to vote is to our advantage.

The 41st District Democrats have generously volunteered to host a phone bank in support of Alec on the evenings of August 14 and 15 (Tuesday and Wednesday) at a location in Bellevue. They have asked if the campaign can supplement their efforts with additional phone bankers.

We will be calling good voters, who have previously indicated that they are Democrats. Our phone message will be short one telling the voter that Alec is supported by the Democrats, Sierra Club, organized labor, and many others, and asking them to vote for him.

If you can help us either (or both) night(s), just respond to this email, or call the campaign at 206/528- 8174.

Sincerely,

Paul Elliott
Comm to Re-Elect Alec Fisken

1. Brad Larssen for King County Council phonebanking
BRAD LARSSEN for King County Council District 6 - DEMOCRAT

Brad Larssen's bid to appear on the General Election ballot, November 6th as the Democratic candidate for KC Council District 6 is in high gear!! Brad and his volunteers have been doorbelling, phoning, marching in parades, and attending meetings/events.

As you know, a write-in campaign is an uphill battle and Brad could use some help, please. If you or anyone in your respective district could lend a hand, Brad would appreciate your help with phone banking.

Randy Gordon, 41st LD PCO, has graciously donated his office space for telephoning each evening from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm: 1200 112th Avenue NE - Suite C110 in downtown Bellevue.

Please call Brad at 206.963.2815 or his campaign manager, Adam White at 360.280.9861 to schedule some phoning time.

This campaign will be won on the ground -- doorbelling and phoning registered voters. The more support Brad has, the better his chances of winning on August 21st.

Please support Brad Larssen in this campaign.

5. More phonebanking for Brad
Brad Larssen has an excellent chance of winning the Primary Election on the Democratic ticket for King County Council District 6. Brad and his campaign have been doorbelling, telephoning, robocalling, and going to many events and meetings. He has secured the endorsements of Democratic organizations as well as both major newspapers. The union support has been outstanding and Brad has gone over the $10,000 level in fundraising.

There's still hard work left in the few remaining days before the August 21st primary. His campaign has the support of an eastside law firm and a union that have offered office space and telephones for phonebanking.

If you can volunteer some time, phonebanking will take place every day at two locations, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Bellevue: 1200 112th Ave. NE, Suite C-110

Kirkland: 13513 NE 126th Place, Suite A-1

Please contact Adam White, Brad's Campaign Manager, at 360.280.9861 or Brad Larssen at 206.963.2815.

WRITE IN, BRAD LARSSEN!!

2. Approve Referendum 67 campaign
Why are thousands of Washington voters already joining the Approve 67 campaign? Because they want the insurance industry to treat them fairly, especially when they're dealing with a personal crisis and need their insurance company to come through for them the most.

That's what Referendum 67 is all about: Requiring that all insurance companies pay legitimate claims in a reasonable and timely manner to ensure they hold up their end of the bargain with Washington consumers.

We're working as hard as we can to get the truth about Referendum 67 out to every voter across Washington State. Today, we're asking for your help to reach your friends, neighbors, and colleagues about Approve 67:

Are you a member of a community organization? Invite a representative from Approve 67 to speak at an upcoming meeting! Once Washington voters learn the truth about Referendum 67, they overwhelmingly support it, and you can help us get the word out locally.

Already, our outreach efforts are paying huge dividends. In just the past two weeks, hundreds of Washington voters -- including you! -- have already signed our Approve 67 online petition, urging support for this common sense measure. Thank you so much for your support. Now help us spread the word far and wide across Washington: Invite your friends & family to sign the Approve 67 online petition as well!

In addition, the coalition of organizations working to Approve 67 is growing by the day. In just the past few days, the Washington Education Association (WEA), the Washington State Council of Firefighters, and the Washington Council of Police & Sheriffs (WACOPS) -- representing thousands of our fellow citizens who educate our children and keep us safe -- all endorsed Approve 67, adding their names to a high-profile list of organizations powering our campaign, including:

Public Citizen
Service Employees International Union -- State Council
United Food and Commercial Workers
WashPIRG (Washington Public Interest Research Group)
Washington Community Action Network
Washington Federation of State Employees (AFSCME)
Washington State Democratic Party
Washington State Labor Council (AFL-CIO)
Washington State Trial Lawyers Association

The momentum for our Approve 67 campaign continues to build because Washington voters realize that Referendum 67 simply requires the insurance industry to be fair. It holds the bad actors accountable for failing to keep their promises to their policyholders.

But the insurance industry has already raised nearly $3.5 million to try to defeat Referendum 67. That's why we need your help to continue to build the grassroots support we need across Washington to Approve 67 this November:

1. Invite an Approve 67 campaign representative to speak at a local meeting! Nothing beats an in-person conversation to get the word out. http://ga3.org/approve67/invite_campaign_rep.html?member_key=wdiudkk9aiewd3w&qp_source=aug7%5finvite%5frep

2. Sign the Approve 67 online petition! Let us know that you're standing with us. http://ga3.org/campaign/pledgenow/wdiudkk9aiewd3w?source=aug7_invite_rep

3. Invite your friends & family to sign the Approve 67 online petition as well! Help spread the word to every Washington voter you know. http://ga3.org/campaign/pledgenow/forward/wdiudkk9aiewd3w?source=aug7_invite_rep

Thank you so much for your support.

Sincerely,

Sue Evans

************

KEITH'S BACKGROUND

War Crimes Prosecutor

Keith was part of a nine-attorney United Nations team prosecuting Serbian politicians and army commanders for the atrocities committed in Kosovo. He negotiated with many different nations regarding the release of confidential documents, drafted the pretrial brief, traveled to Serbia to meet with police officials and search police archives, and presented witnesses and argument in court.

Deputy Prosecutor

Keith was a courtroom prosecutor in Norm Maleng's office. In addition to prosecuting hundreds of trials and motions, during an assignment to the King County Sheriff's Office, Keith helped draft and pass child protection legislation. While working for the Sheriff, he worked directly with sheriff's teams to draft and serve search warrants, train deputies in proper search procedures, and provide legal advice on criminal cases. He argued cases to the Court of Appeals, and was later chosen to respond to a case alleging racially biased policing on the part of the Seattle Police Department. Keith negotiated a resolution that was accepted by all involved. Keith was also chosen to initiate the mortgage fraud program, and rapidly built a team of investigators who broke up a mortgage scheme centered in Kirkland.

Environmental Lawyer

Keith is currently the legal director of Futurewise, where he manages the litigation program of this progressive nonprofit group. Futurewise works to protect farms and forests, and manage growth, by providing input to cities and counties on their comprehensive plans and development regulations.

Law firm lawyer

Keith started his legal career at Perkins Coie, one of the Pacific Northwest's largest law firms, where he worked on complex utilities and telecommunications regulatory cases and general civil litigation.

Paramedic

Keith was a paramedic in some of America's toughest cities, including Jersey City, Paterson, and Newark, New Jersey. His paramedic experience brought him into direct contact with crime at its most personal: responding to the mayhem caused by everything from drug overdoses to gun violence to drunk driving.

Family

Keith and his wife of 13 years, Jennifer Scully, live in Green Lake with their two children, Katie and Finn. A two-lawyer family, Jennifer works for Microsoft as a trademark attorney. Katie attends Seattle Public School at Greenlake Elementary, and Finnegan is in preschool at St. Ben's in Wallingford. Keith's father is a retired firefighter; his mother worked her way through Harvard Law School and practices law in California. Keith's brother is a schoolteacher.

Democratic Party

Keith is a lifelong Democrat. He is currently a Precinct Committee Officer in the 43rd District. He has previously served as a PCO, treasurer, and vice-chair of the 11th District Democrats. He volunteered on Al Gore’s campaign, and was on Governor Gregoire's steering committee for West King County.

Academic

Keith has a law degree from New York University, one of the Nation's top ten law schools. He has a Master's Degree in Middle Eastern History from Tufts University, and earned his Bachelor's from the University of California -- Los Angeles.

Civic Activities

Keith was on Habitat for Humanity's family selection committee for several years, and regularly volunteers his time as a moot court judge at both Seattle University and the University of Washington Schools of Law.

Hobbies

Keith is an avid rock climber, sea kayaker, and hiker. He recently took his two children on an overnight camping trip to Heather Lake, and inadvertently introduced them to the joys and challenges of snow camping! He and his wife Jennifer also share an interest in oil painting, and have a friendly competition going regarding the quality and quantity of work -- a contest repeatedly won hands-down by Jennifer.

6. Kucinich meetup for Skagit and Snohomish counties 10/9
Mark this day on your calendars: October 9, at 7:00 PM at Dem. Headquarters in Mount Vernon. Last night we had folks from Skagit and Snohomish counties at the Kucinich Meet-up, and now we need to increase the numbers of people attending. Folks from Whatcom, Island, Snohomish and Skagit counties need to show up.

Plans are to move the meetings from one locale to another, so that meetings will be held in each of the four counties. (And an offshoot of that is that we'll all be able to travel to one another's county. That sure helps with networking.)

There will be a speaker from Seattle.

7. Bus from Seattle to help Whatcom county's Ken Mann 9/28
You're invited to be part of the inaugural trip of the Washington Bus. The bus isn't metro or sound transit, but we like that, too. The bus is a vehicle for hands on democracy to help elect progressives.

Working with the great people at the Bus project, we're going pick up volunteers from Seattle to put some "boots on the ground" to help great candidates running in tough races all over the state.

People like Ken Mann, a Progressive Majority candidate for Whatcom County Council.

You see, Ken's in a bit of a bind.

He's running against a far-right conservative, Sam Crawford, who refuses to address the number one environmental problem facing Whatcom County - the polluting of Lake Whatcom, where the county gets their drinking water!

In a move mimicking global warming deniers, Crawford has dismissed 30 years of scientific research about Lake Whatcom's environmental problems even as he acknowledged that some non-specific action is necessary.

And Ken needs your help to get his message to the voters.

That's where the bus comes in. They've bought a big ole' bus and need Progressive Majority's help to fill it with people like you to come on up to Bellingham and help Ken out.

Here are the details:

What: Ken Mann Doorbelling Day
When: Saturday, Sept. 29, 8:45 am
Where: Triangle Park on Beacon Hill (map)
Return: The bus will return to Seattle around 7 pm
Food and Beer: Provided all day. Veggie options available as well.
RSVP: Click here to reserve your spot on the bus today!

See you on the bus!

11. Still seats available
Are you free this Saturday, Sept. 29th?

Progressive Majority is organizing volunteers to fill a busload of people from Seattle up to Bellingham for some old fashioned grassroots campaigning! And we're gonna ride it to help out Ken Mann's campaign for Whatcom County Council.

Click here to reserve your spot on the bus.

Why Ken? He's running against a far-right conservative incumbent, Sam Crawford, who refuses to address the number one environmental problem facing Whatcom County - the polluting of Lake Whatcom, where the county gets their drinking water!

In a move mimicking global warming deniers, Crawford has dismissed 30 years of scientific research about Lake Whatcom's environmental issues even as he acknowledged that some non-specific action is necessary.

This is the inaugural ride of the bus, so you can help make some campaign history. Are you willing?

14. Another Progressive Majority bus to Tacoma 10/13
Did you ever get that sinking feeling that you missed the bus?

Well, in our case, you get another chance.

Yes, that's right, the Washington Bus will ride again to help another great Progressive Majority-endorsed candidate. You may remember 10 days ago when we helped Ken Mann up in Bellingham fight hard for his County Council seat.

Do you know how powerful it was to see tons of volunteers knocking on thousands of doors to deliver a progressive message? You'll have the opportunity to be part of that feeling on October 13th.

This time, we're going to be mobilizing to the south, where the Bus heads to Tacoma to help Marilyn Strickland's campaign. Strickland is in a tough battle for a seat on the Tacoma City Council.

Despite being one of the more diverse cities in the state (over 30% people of color), Tacoma doesn't have a single person of color serving on its City Council, School Board or County Council.

What: Marilyn Strickland Doorbelling Day

When: Saturday, October 13th, 9:30 am in Seattle (10:45 in Tacoma)

Where: Triangle Park on Beacon Hill, corner of S Stevens and Beacon Ave S
Tacoma Meetup Location: Commencement Bay Coffee, 2354 Jefferson Ave, Tacoma 98402.

Return: The bus will return to Seattle around 6 pm. Let us know if you aren't in Seattle and prefer to meet us in Tacoma.

Food and Beer: Provided all day. Veggie options available as well.

RSVP: Click here to reserve your spot on the bus today!

And that’s why Progressive Majority is urging you to hop on the Washington Bus again on November 3rd to turn out voters for Ken Mann. The maiden voyage of the Washington Bus in September resulted in reaching 2,000 doors for Ken Mann.

You can really make a difference in this tight race and bring a progressive to the Whatcom County Council. The margin of victory could be the door you knock on. And that’s something you can be proud of.

Click here to reserve your spot on the bus.

When: Saturday, November 3rd, 9:00 am in Seattle

P.S. Remember I told you about the photographer who developer interests hired to follow us around on our last trip? Looks like those developers are scared of our aggressive, grassroots campaigns in Whatcom - scared enough to put out a hit piece mailer targeting great progressive candidates like Ken Mann.

Want to make their day? Volunteer to hit the streets.

YES ON ROADS AND TRANSIT CAMPAIGN

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Campaign season is here and we need your help to win! Transportation Choices in partnership with other major environmental organizations are organizing a major field effort for the YES on Roads and Transit campaign to bring 50 miles of light rail to the Puget Sound region. Proposition 1, which goes before the voters on November 6, 2007, will make a significant investment in our region's transportation infrastructure, expanding choices for people to get out of their cars.

HOW CAN YOU HELP:

Volunteer for the Phone Bank

We need your help for the phone banks. Right now, we are coordinating volunteers for the following dates and times at the Seattle Chamber of Commerce office:

October 22 - 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
October 25 - 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
October 29 - 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
November 5 - 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
November 6 - Election Day! all day

Please let me know if you can help out on any of the above dates with the phone banks. Bring your friends, family or co-workers. More the merrier!

Please email me at shefali {at} transportationchoices.org or call 206-329-2336 if you would like to help with the phonebanks.
Write Letters to the Editor

Let your voice of support be heard! Don't know where to get started? We can help you with some talking points. Just email me at shefali@transportat ionchoices .org or call 206-329-2336 for more information.

Talk to Friends, Family, and Neighbors

Talk to friends and neighbors about Proposition 1. Urge them to vote YES on November 6. Here are a few links with information on the measure.

Thank you, Erna

Please pass this on.
It's the only way we can think of to allow many people to meet Lois, considering Pete's incumbency and budget advantages.

Thanks,

Lois and crew (via Sharon)

18. Question Renton candidates for mayor and city council 10/24
Come meet the Renton City Council Candidates and Mayoral Candidates for an informal question and answer session. No organization has been willing to host a candidate forum, but we still feel like the citizens need to know the differences between the candidate's running. Here's the information:

Location: Merrill Gardens (in the media room)

Address: 104 Burnett Ave. S. Renton

Time: 6:00-8:00pm

Date: Wednesday October 24, 2007

The event will be filmed by the Puget Sound Access channel, so if you cannot make it, you can still watch the event to understand the candidate's positions. Questions? Please call Mayor Kathy Keolker's campaign manager, Raechelle Turner at (206) 718-2022 or email at rturner {at} mayorkathy.com.

Thanks!

21. Megachurch is trying to buy the Kirkland city council election; visibility workers needed
---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Diane Brennan <dalaine00 {t} yahoo.com>
Date: Nov 5, 2007 2:25 PM
Subject: Action Alert: Kirkland Church that Funds Kenmore Elections

I've been contacted by someone who is looking for volunteers to hold signs tomorrow morning on 68th and Bothell Way in Kenmore. This is an unusual request because the signs have messages about how Christ Church of Kirkland is funding candidates for Kenmore City Council which has resulted in that church having influence over our city's politics. But it's difficult to find people because so many people who are against this church group are afraid of a backlash against their businesses or their groups if they say anything publicly. We realize that this action would have no effect whatsoever on this campaign, but we are trying to educate people about this issue so that we can get ahead of the curve for the next election. We think that this church will be bringing in a bunch of people from outside of Kenmore this afternoon to hold signs for city council candidates that are supported by the church.

Some of the aforementioned signs showed up around Kenmore this morning, with messages such as "Christ Church of Kirkland $$ can't buy Kenmore" and "Christ Church of Kirkland $$ doesn't know what Kenmore wants".

So if anyone on this list is interested in helping out on this, send me e-mail.

Diane Brennan
