1. Justice Works! looking for volunteers
As of 2003, according to the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics,
--1,355,748 of our citizens are in federal and state prisons
--665,475 are in local jails
--100,000 minors under the age of 18 are in juvenile facilities
--4,000,000 people are on probation
--775,000 people are on parole.

As of 2001, 6,627,322 Americans were under the supervision of the U.S. criminal justice system at a cost of over $49 billion. That same year, the federal Department of Education budget was only a little over $42 billion.

Instead of questioning our mass incarceration approach to crime, our plans for Washington State are: 4,000 new beds will be added to our existing 15 prisons. 3 brand new prisons will be built.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO WORK WITH JUSTICE WORKS! AS WE RESEARCH AND PROMOTE EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVES TO INCARCERATION.

3. Bicycle Alliance of Washington Seattle office needs volunteers
Members, Advocates and volunteers,

lend me your.... fingers?

We have a huge back up of Data Entry to do here at BAW, so if you have an hour or two (or more) sometime this week or next, and you'd like to volunteer to help bicycle advocacy in Washington State we could really use your help!

It would be best to let us know you are coming, and good times are Thursday evening or during the day on Wednesday, Friday or next Tuesday.

Bicycle everything!
Group Health Seattle International Bicycle Expo is a complete celebration of cycling, with hundreds of exhibits and presentations on all aspects of the sport (latest models of bikes and bike gear, accessories, touring, talks and presentations, etc.).

BAW Role: Help Staff Bicycle Alliance of Washington Information Booth

Again this year, the Bicycle Alliance of Washington will have an information booth at this most interesting major bike rider and bike industry event. BAWs booth will be just inside the entrance to Bike Expo and we need volunteers to help get our message out about advocacy for bicyclists and a bike-friendly Washington. This means staffing our booth to hand out BAW brochures, postcards to encourage cycling enthusiast to buy Share the Road license plates, handing out information about other club bike rides that support BAW, and information about potential legislative bills people may want to contact their legislators about to support bicycling safety and facility and program improvements statewide. And for more fun, before or after your volunteer shift, your volunteer pass will allow you to enjoy browsing all the great exhibits and lust after the latest gear in biking and hear some interesting talks.

If interested and able to help out, we need 12 volunteers to cover shifts at our BAW booth - 7 on Saturday and 5 on Sunday. The BAW volunteer shifts we need for our information booth are:

Saturday March 10: Bike Expo Open 9:00 am to 6:00 pm
9:00 am to 12:00 Noon: 2 people
12:00 Noon to 3:00 pm: 2 people
3:00 pm to 6:00 pm: 2 people
+ Extra midday coverage from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm: 1 person

Sunday March 11
10:00 am to 1:00 pm: 2 people
1:00 pm to 4:00 pm: 2 people
+ Extra midday coverage from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm: 1 person

If you are interested and able to join us to cover any of the above 3-hour shifts, please sign up by sending an email with the following: the time and day for which you are interested, your name and phone number where you can be reached (day/work phone plus night/weekend please). Be a bike advocate!

Come down to our fun work party, enjoy the yummy snacks (chocolate is a
specialty)visit with other cyclists catch up on the skinny of what's going on
with bicycling in the legislature and around the state and help out a bit with our mailing.

It's fun and it really makes a difference. WE NEED YOU.

5. Don't let anti-choice legislators GUT a good sex education bill!
2007 is the year to pass our sex education legislation and we can't do it without YOUR help. The Healthy Youth Act, a bill aimed at increasing access to comprehensive and medically accurate sex education in Washington state schools, is making its way through our state legislature and it looks like this bill is going to PASS! But anti-choice legislators still have a chance to GUT the bill through the amendment process.

Help us send a clear message to anti-choice legislators that Washington State youth deserve the plain truth about their health, safety, and bodies.

You can help by participating in our phone banks which run Mondays through Thursdays from 5:00 and 8:00 pm. The phone banks have already begun and will be on-going until the bill passes.

Internet Research and Data Entry

This is the perfect volunteer opportunity if you who don't feel like exerting a lot of brain power at the end of a long work day but still want to contribute to a cause you are passionate about. Volunteers can come to our downtown Seattle office to help with internet research and data entry during the following days and times:

-Monday through Thursday between 9:00 am and 8:00 pm
-Fridays between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm

NARAL Pro-Choice Washington will be offering Volunteer-N-Drink-A-Beer night on the first and third Tuesdays of each month from 5:00 to 8:00 pm! Washington Conservation Voters
Internship Program

Washington Conservation Voters is looking for interns who are energetic, hard working, interested in politics and committed to the environment.

Interns will work in our Seattle office in the following areas: politics, development and membership, organizational development, grassroots capacity building, and/or outreach to the public.

Specific projects include:
- researching conservation and political credentials of candidates running for office
- researching opportunities to increase our membership database
- community outreach
- organizing volunteers for campaign activities such as doorbelling and phone banking
- assisting in event planning and development
- tracking issues and candidates in the media
- data entry and administrative duties

We are flexible and can work around your work/life/school schedule. We can offer credit and a transportation stipend if needed.

9. Help with Mothers' Day peace project
Hi everyone, I am seeking supporters for the Department of Peace campaign in eastern Washington.

We need your help in advocating for peace for Mothers Day. Are you willing to deliver a Department of Peace pie chart, on or before Friday, May 11, to the offices of your representative and/or senators? For more information on this peace advocacy campaign: http://www.thepeacealliance.org

Representative Cathy McMorris-Rogers from the WA 5th CD is the Republican co-chair of the Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues. (The Democratic co-chair is Lois Capps from Los Angeles.) We want the Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues to take up an official study the Dept of Peace legislation, HR 808, this year. We are looking for people to deliver pie charts (and pies, if youre so inclined) to Rep McMorris-Rogers offices in Spokane, Colville, and Walla Walla along with a request for an official study of the Department of Peace legislation. (A team visiting Representative Lois Capps Los Angeles office on May 11 will be making the same request.)

Were also looking for people to visit offices of Senators Cantwell and Murray in Spokane, Richland, and Yakima (we do have one person planning to visit Senator Murrays office in Yakima). Plus theres Representative Doc Hastings office, WA 4th CD, in Richland. Are you available to visit one of these offices?

10. Volunteer to evaluate high school presentations on science/ethics topics
Students (9th and 10th graders) in the Ballard High School Biotech Academy are gearing up for their Ethics Presentations in late May. This is an integrated project with Biology, Math, and Language Arts where the students choose an ethical topic in science, write a paper with pro and con arguments, and then present their findings to their classes, teachers, and a panel of scientists.

Your help is needed! 3-5 scientists per day are needed to judge the student presentations. There is a rubric to follow for the speeches and for the visual aids that the students use. 1-2 scientists will ask each student a question about their topic. It's a fairly easy process!

DATES: Monday through Friday, May 21st to 25th.
TIME: 8:10-10:30 am at Ballard HS
ACTIVITY: Evaluate student presentations and visual aids using a rubric. There are 10-1 5 presentations per day.

11. Current NARAL volunteer opportunities
2007 Power of Choice Breakfast

On Wednesday, May 30, join NARAL Pro-Choice Washington PAC and Governor Gregoire as we prepare for the 2008 elections. The proceeds from this event will support pro-choice candidates in 2008. With your help, we had pro-choice victories up and down the ballot in 2006. Let's keep that momentum going, and make 2008 the best year for choice yet!

We will need a handful of registration volunteers to help this event flow smoothly. Registration volunteers need to arrive at the Sheraton Hotel in Seattle by 7:00am.

Data Entry, Data Entry, and MORE Data Entry!

Our summer tabling/petitioning season will kick-off at The U District Street Fair the weekend of May 19. From that weekend until the end of the summer we will collect approximately 10,000 petition signatures. This means that we have a HUGE need for on-going data entry help all summer. The best things about volunteering to help us with data entry is that the times you can come in are very flexible AND you can come in for as much or as little time as you'd like.

Monday through Thursday anytime between 9:00am and 8:00pm
Fridays anytime between 9:00am and 5:00pm

Auction Item Pick-Up & Delivery

Believe it or not, it is already time to begin preparing for our annual fall auction, our biggest fundraiser of the year. We need volunteer help picking up the generous donations from community members and businesses and bringing them to the NARAL Pro-Choice Washington office in downtown Seattle. This is the perfect volunteer opportunity if you want to volunteer an hour here or there in your free time, but can't commit to extended periods of time in the office.

Angry about the Supreme Court? DO something about it! So how are we going to defeat this ban now that Bush's appointees upheld it? Simple. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington is participating in a nationwide campaign to support the Freedom of Choice Act. This act is legislation that would codify Roe v. Wade into law, and guarantee the right to choose for generations to come.

We are gathering signatures of support for the Freedom of Choice Act and our goal is to reach 10,000 by the end of summer. We have two upcoming tabling opportunities with volunteer shifts throughout the weekend. Come help us reach our goal!

16. Help Justice Works! get ex-prisoners set up in their own businesses

Justice Works! is establishing new ways to support newly released incarcerated people who desire to start their own small business.

We are creating BUSINESS SENDOFF PROJECTS. That means we are providing Business Development training, gathering needed supplies and equipment and locating business mentors. The newly released person works with us until they can run their business independently. So far, we have what is needed for a carpet cleaning business.

Now we are looking for your help to organize the next BUSINESS SENDOFF PROJECTS. Below are some ways you can help:

Donate equipment for a firewood business (chain saws, splitters, axes, etc)
Donate shipping supplies for an online book selling business
Donate equipment or supplies for any other small business idea
Donate your used vehicle (car, van, small truck)
Offer to become a business mentor

-We have donated computers (and internet access) for residents of the JW! headquarters but we could use some help setting them up.

-Do you like to do landscaping? Our yard could use some tlc. Do you have any gardening tools youd like to donate?

Were still having our weekend yard sales. Do you have any good quality donations to spare?

-We need new light switch and outlet cover plates.

-Like to paint? Have we got a deal for you? Do you have any useable paint you dont need? We can use it?

17. Tutor prisoners by mail
Hello,

We are seeking Outside Partners for our JW! ROOTS program.
ROOTS is our program of correspondence classes for incarcerated people.


Your role as a ROOTS Outside Partner would be to:
* Provide encouragement and support to your student partner.
* Encourage your student to learn more about Justice Works! Our goal is for them to become part of the JW! community upon their release.
* Represent Justice Works! well. To students new to us, you ARE Justice Works!


This is how it works:
1) When a student requests a class, we mail her/him an agreement to sign and the first lesson in the class.
2) We will email you the first lesson in the class.
3) As soon as your student sends us their written assignment, we will mail it (via the US mail) to you.
4) You will write your student a letter with your comments on their assignment.
5) You will mail your letter to the JW! PO Box. We will then mail it to your student. We repeat this for each lesson.

If you would like to be an outside partner we will send you:
* an agreement and the confidentiality form to sign
* tips for Outside Partners
* the ROOTS class catalog

After receiving your signed agreement, we will assign you a student.

NARAL Pro-Choice Washington volunteers have been out at festivals each weekend and we have just hit our halfway mark to our goal of 10,000 signatures asking our members of Congress to prioritize the Freedom of Choice Act. We need your help to succeed by August!

Following is a report from WPC's Director, and a PLEA for MORE HANDS ON DECK - Volunteers needed!

Our organization is growing - over 3,700 on the mailing list.
Local chapters are forming; Meet-Ups are being scheduled; grassroots leaders are stepping forward, and we're taking our issue directly to the people - who are tired of money-dominated politics and eager for fundamental change.

Our summer organizing drive - gathering signatures on Citizens' Petitions, a.k.a. "Clean Summer" - is in full-swing, meeting these goals:

1. To reach more people, so they learn there is a solution (public financing of campaigns) and an organization (WPC) fighting to curb the power of special interest money.
2. Through thousands of signatures, to demonstrate public support for public financing of campaigns, to candidates and elected lawmakers.
3. To expand our mailing list, adding new supporters who previously did not know about WPC.


But all along, our staffing has been: one person, not even an office. So we depend on volunteers.

CAN YOU HELP?
We need dedicated volunteers, for the following positions:

CITIZEN PETITIONERS and TABLERS: Staff WPC information tables at events, such as street fairs, outdoor markets, neighborhood gatherings; collect signatures on WPC's Citizens Petition form.

DATA-ENTRY TEAM MEMBERS: Assist with data-entry of membership records, from Citizen Petitions, contributions, unsubscribe requests, and thank you notes to contributors.

LOCAL CHAPTER LEADERS and TASK COORDINATORS: Organize and carry out work of local chapters, per chapter decisions and guidelines. (For a list of existing chapters, visit the website: http://www.washclean.org/localchapters.htm If no chapter exists in your area, we'll help you start one!)


ALSO, we are looking for a FEW GOOD STAFFERS (volunteer), as follows:

MEMBERSHIP COORDINATOR: Oversee WPC membership mailing list and membership records; recruit, coordinate and supervise volunteer data-entry team members, and contributor records and thank you notes.

ADVOCACY (Lobbying) COORDINATOR: Work with Policy Committee and Legislative Action Team, to evaluate and recommend legislative strategy, and to coordinate citizen lobbying activities.

RESEARCH TEAM COORDINATOR and Members: Gather and compile data and information, guided by the Research Committee, to evaluate and/or support specific legislative proposals, and to support public education and organizing work.

FIELD ORGANIZER(S): Provide support to local chapters in organizing efforts and activities, and to creating local advocacy groups and chapters in targeted areas.

COALITION TEAM MEMBERS: Propose and carry out specific outreach to selected constituency organizations, to build awareness of WPC and CE, seek endorsements, and seek working relationships with WPC in organizing and advocacy work.

These Team Members will be organized in Groups, with members recruited from the constituencies and organizations targeted for outreach. E.g. Labor Group, Environmental Group, Faith-based Group, Human Services Group, Special Constituency Group, etc.

PRESENTATION SPEAKERS: Make presentations to groups (by invitation) about Clean Campaigns and WPC's organizing work, coordinated and deployed by the Speakers Bureau. Prior training required, via attendance at WPC Advocacy Workshops. We will schedule these, as needed.

SPECIAL EVENTS TEAM MEMBERS: Provide logistical support at special events (e.g. public forums, fundraisers), including promotion work, event set-up, greeters, refreshments, drivers, overnight hosting, etc.

Would you like to be part of a transportation photo shoot? Here's your chance! Join International Sustainable Solutions in partnership with regional agencies such as SDOT, King County Metro and Sound Transit on the morning of Sunday, August 26 to help produce a series of photos showing the benefits of better transportation solutions. The City of Seattle is shutting down two blocks of Second Avenue so we can take five photos that show the impact of moving people on foot, bicycles, buses, or light rail, rather than in their cars. We are looking for about 200 volunteers to stage these images. Mayor Nickels and Executive Sims think this is so important they are volunteering their time, so we hope you will, too.

The photos will be part of the Commuter Toolkit, a series of materials which will be freely distributed to the public and to media in order to highlight the importance of developing robust transportation alternatives, and illustrate some of the key transportation initiatives now under way in our region. The Gay and Lesbian Leadership Institute's Candidate & Campaign Trainings provide comprehensive, nonpartisan training to present and future openly LGBT candidates, campaign staff, and community leaders. During the Institutes intensive four-day training, attendees learn from top political strategists and elected officials during the day and work with their peers on a complex campaign simulation at night. 30. WashClean signature gathering 8/25 in Renton
Hello, WashClean folks in the 11th District (Renton),

Here is a fun event - to gather signatures, with BBQ afterward!

The City of Renton is having an Art Walk Saturday/Sunday, August 25-26th, at Renton Downtown Piazza, South Third Street and Burnett Avenue South, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Art Walk promotional literature says: Indoor and outdoor exhibits by 100 artists, entertainment, meet the artists and explore antiques.

This would be a great time to stroll, with WashClean literature, and gather signatures on our Citizens' Petition - which will demonstrate public support for public financing and Clean Campaigns, for near-future meetings with 11th District legislators!

Dear Friend of the Backbone Campaign,

I want to tell you about an exciting development in the Backbone Campaign and to ask for your support to make it happen. Since its inception, the Backbone Campaign has been a beacon of reason, inspiration, and creativity. The resonance of our message, fueled by the energy of committed individuals, has enabled us to grow over the past four years, to a nationally renowned and artful voice in a growing progressive movement.

Our tools and projects are in such demand that we cannot keep up at our current capacity. Currently, we have one paid staff person (me). We would like to expand by two additional half-time paid staff to respond to increasing demands and to develop and implement an exciting new project, the Backbone Campaign's Procession for the Future and its Spring 2008 Campus Tour.

The first staff person we would like to add immediately is Amy Morrison. For the last three and a half years Amy has served as a volunteer Managing Director. The Backbone Campaign Board of Directors and I would like her to continue and expand on her good work for the organization as a paid staff person. She has asked to be compensated for a half time job. Will you help us realize our goal of increasing our capacity and building a Procession for the Future?

The Procession for the Future is like a traveling Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, but instead of celebrating Porky the Pig and Bullwinkle, the Procession for the Future will animate a progressive vision for the country with giant puppets and floats that portray progressive agenda items such as:

* Fair Trade & Living Wage Jobs

* Ecological Sustainability & Renewable Energy

* The End of War & Dismantling of Empire

* Election Integrity & Renewal of Democracy

* Housing, Education and Health Care for All

* A Humane & Fair Immigration Policy

* Protection of Family Farms and Local Economies, and other progressive policies.

At the end of each Procession, the festival art pieces will circle up in a park or campus and become a theme park for education and training, with information on each of the issue areas and activist trainings on social justice organizing.

The Procession will launch March 4th, 2008 with a tour of campuses and cities across the country and then continue through Summer and Fall of 2008, visiting swing states and other strategically important locales to visually inspire and educate Americans so they can hold candidates accountable to a progressive agenda.

We have ambitious goals for the coming year, and we need to grow to meet them. Hello all,

This is a little different than the usual request, if you could foster one of the dogs no later than tomorrow night and keep them until Sat/Sun (or if you are around for the holiday weekend Tuesday), this would be AWESOME! Even better, if you can foster them until they are adopted that would be perfect!!

A few reminders:
A. Dog are to remain on leash at all times (except in the house)
B. The dogs should have as little stimulation as possible (due stress, sleep deprived, unknown background.. .), please don't take them to parties, car rides, boat rides, festivals... (exception puppies)
C. No visitors the first few days, they need to time adjust and feel safe (exception puppies)
D. NO off leash parks

#11618 - Casey 4 month old spayed lab/pointer mix, needy and active but sweet and GREAT with other dogs

#12260 - shy adult medium sized shepherd mix, quiet and housebroken, ok with some dogs

#11964 - Noelle, 10 month old lab/greyhound, return adoption due to moving, ok with other dogs, shy with men at first, housebroken

#11851 - Jessie 1 year old border collie, good with other dogs but very high energy

#11951 - Dixon, 3 month old lab mix, sweet pup, pretty mellow

#12306 1+2 - 2 3 month old sweet lab mix pups

#12005 - 1 year old female pit bull, found as a stray with a bassett hound who was her buddy, and the owner was found

#12048 - Harper, 3 year old neutered male Lab, ok with other dogs and housebroken

Even if we can get some of these dogs out for a couple of days, this would help for the sealant application issue. Some of these dogs might be transferred to other shelters if they have room, many of which are already full with dogs from their own communities so I'd like to get these dogs into foster if possible.

34. Justice Works! needs phone tree volunteers and is offering organizer training
Starting in September, will increase our focus on TRAINING and SELF CARE for the Justice Works! community.

ORGANIZER TRAINING

Even when we are intimately aware of the problems we face, acquiring the organizer skills needed to address these problems takes training. So, our regular Friday general meetings will now include 15 minutes of organizer training. Additionally, twice a month, starting in October, we will have longer organizer training sessions. We will have speakers from the community along with other specific curriculum. This training is FREE in exchange for your participation in our organizing work. Below is an outline of some of the topics that will be covered. Please feel free to reply to this message if you may be interested in participating as a student, a community speaker and / or a lesson developer / presenter. Participants will not be required to attend every session.

SELF CARE

We all know about stress. Justice Works! exists because things are not right. Stress prevents some people from being able to participate in the work. Stress lessens our effectiveness and our stamina overall. So, we will now incorporate SELF CARE into our activities. Below are some examples of when / where / what this will look like.

Starting Wednesday, September 5th and continuing every Wednesday at 7pm, we will have SELF CARE RELAXATION. These guided relaxations will soothe mind and body.

After our Saturday, September 8th Voting Rights Workshop (in preparation for our Voting Right Door To Door Outreach), we will have a contest. We will be reaching back into childhood memories and doing paper mach . Silly? You bet! Join us for some fun!

After our Saturday, October 6th Voting Rights Door To Door Outreach we will be playing our own unique version of Pictionary. Maybe we could call it Penitentionary! Combining our drawings with prisoner art and other prison related pictures / art, we will then create a collage to hang on the wall!



PHONE TREES

As organizers we educate and we mobilize. Mobilizing requires that we establish different mechanisms that allow people to easily communicate to power holders. We are creating three new phone trees. Please reply to this message if youd like to be on any of these phone trees.

If you are willing to be on a phone tree intended to communicate to decision makers about the importance of restoring the right to vote to all previously incarcerated people (no matter their financial status), please join the VOTING RIGHTS PHONE TREE.

35. Seattle Department of Transportation looking for bike counters
From Bicycling Alliance--

Help the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) help us! They are looking for volunteers for the downtown bicycle counts on Wednesday, September 19th. These counts are important as they help us justify the need for more facilities. They want to place at least one person at each of 29 counting locations. The locations are all between Belltown and Pioneer Square, and each volunteer can expect to be in position and counting from 6:30 to 9:00 AM. A Childs Christmas in Wales Adapted from the story by Dylan Thomas. Recreate the nostalgic magic of Dylan Thomas childhood.
Auditions for Youth and Adults for Stone Soup Theatres Fall Production of A Childs Christmas in Wales will take place Sunday, September 23 & 30 at 12:00 3:00 pm and Monday September 24 at 4:00 7:00 pm.

Youth Auditions (Ages 8 -20) are required to present a one minute monologue or poem and be prepared to sing or play a musical instrument if you are a singer or a musician.

BECOME A LEGAL OBSERVER AND PROTECT CIVIL LIBERTIES !

Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) agents continue to terrorize immigrant communities in Washington State and across the country with increasingly militaristic raids, armed arrests, covert detentions and deportations. Help protect immigrant workers from these aggressive enforcement tactics and violations of civil and human rights. This harassment of our friends and neighbors is funded by our tax dollars! Join us by Saying NO! to this injustice and being in solidarity with immigrant families from across the State and joining a legal observer team in your area.

What is a Legal Observer?

Traditionally, a legal observer is a volunteer who attends demonstrations, protests and similar events to ensure that everyones rights are upheld. In this instance we observe I.C.E. agents and raids to ensure there is no violence and no abuses of the immigrant communitys civil rights.

Why should I become a Legal Observer?

While observing I.C.E. actions, Legal Observers are also deterring abuses with their presence, documenting possible violations of civil and human rights as well as any unnecessary violence towards immigrant workers by these armed Federal Agents.

What are the duties of the Legal Observer?

During any I.C.E. action, Legal Observers will position themselves at a safe distance from the raid or detention, but will remain separate from them. They will at all times remain non-violent and non-confrontational with both I.C.E. agents and law enforcement.

Can Legal Observers discuss issues with I.C.E. Agents?

While most legal observers feel strongly about the issues, they have chosen to protect the rights of others at the sacrifice of their own personal expression. The legal Observers presence alone is the statement. While many may feel a strong impulse to engage in dialogue or be confrontational, they are trained to resist confrontation.

Is it safe to become a Legal Observer?

Legal Observers will be sent in groups with nothing more than cell phones and video and photo cameras to I.C.E. operations. Additionally, legal observers may find themselves in areas no governmental or law enforcement protection. Nevertheless, legal observers are to adhere to strict non-violence and will always be unarmed. It is our greatest hope that there will be no violence.

39. Seattle Bicycle Advisory Board members needed
Mayor Greg Nickels is seeking candidates for the Seattle Bicycle Advisory Board.

The board consists of 11 members who serve two-year terms in a volunteer capacity. The boards primary role is to advise the mayor, City Council and all departments and offices of the city on matters related to bicycling and the implementation of the new Seattle Bicycle Master Plan.

More specifically, board members seek to improve safety, access, and mobility for bicyclists. Board members contribute to planning and developing projects, as well as evaluating and recommending changes in city policies, design guidelines and regulations.

Individuals selected must have perspective, experience, and talents which will enhance the boards expertise and effectiveness. If you are interested in being considered, send a letter of interest and resume which demonstrates your knowledge, experience, and insights into bicycle current issues.

Citizens' Telecommunications and Technology Advisory Board

The CTTAB reflects a broad range of professional and community
experience and perspectives and seeks to be representative of the
cultural diversity of the Seattle community. The 16-member board advises
city officials on issues of community-wide interest relating to
telecommunications and technology, including cable television access and
community technology access. The board is involved in the Community
Technology Matching Fund and My Neighborhood Map, a Seattle geographic
information system available to the public. The board has also been
actively involved in the cityfs exploration of providing fiber to
homes and looking at ways to make boards and commission meetings more
accessible to the public through technology.

Fire Code Advisory Board

The Fire Code Advisory Board is 15 members board. All 15 are appointed
by the Mayor and subject to confirmation by the City Council.
Volunteers serve a three year term. The FCAB advises the City on
proposed amendments related to the Fire Code and hears appeals related
to interpretation and application of the Fire Code. They also make
recommendations to Fire Chief relating to such appeals.

Landmarks Preservation Board

The 12-member Landmarks Preservation Board makes recommendations to the
City Council for landmark designation and reviews all proposed physical

representative each from the fields of real estate and finance, one
member from the City Planning Commission, a Get Engaged member, and
three members at-large. Board meetings are held on the first and third
Wednesday of each month at 3:30 p.m. The architect members also serve on
the Boardfs Architectural Review Committee. Board members generally
must commit approximately 10 hours per month to board business.

Mayor's Council on African American Elders

The Mayor's Council on African American Elders (MCAAE) is a 12 member
commission established in 1995, by former Mayor Norman B. Rice. The
MCAAE mission is to improve the quality of life of isolated, frail, and
low-income African American elders in Seattle by promoting accessible,
high quality, culturally appropriate and comprehensive services. All
positions are mayoral appointed, with terms lasting two or three years.

Museum Development Authority

The Museum Development Authority of Seattle (MDA), a public
corporation, was granted a charter by the Mayor of Seattle in 1985 to

of the MDAfs activities is performed by staff of the Seattle Art
Museum. The MDA has three main responsibilities:

The Pike Place Market Historical Commission is comprised of 12 members

the Pike Place Market, within the Market Historical District. They also
provide for continued preservation of existing buildings, new
construction, and continued occupancy by traditional Market activities.

Seattle Bicycle Advisory Board

The Bicycle Advisory Board is comprised of 11 members appointed by
Mayor to 2-year terms. The SBAB advises the City Council, the Mayor, and

and the impacts that actions of the City may have upon bicycling. They
contribute to all aspects of the City's planning processes insofar as
they relate to bicycling. Much of their work has consisted of preparing
the Bicycle Master Plan, which is now in the process of being
implemented.

The Seattle Center Advisory Commission advises Center staff, Mayor and

45. Support Cascade People's Center in Seattle
For several years, the Cascade People's Center was home to Justice Works! We feel a lot of gratitude for their support. But now, they need our support. The Center is now in a crisis since the Seattle City Human Services Dept. plans to discontinue funding and the center could close before the end of the year.

Community members have worked incredibly hard to make The Cascade People's Center the beautiful place that it is today. Without us, there are few checks and balances. All groups who have used the Center over time are being asked to help save the Center by participating in the activities and actions below. Please help as you are able. Let's be seen and heard!


UPDATE FROM CASCADE PEOPLE'S CENTER

All of the e-mails, letters, phone calls, and press have made people takenotice! We've received positive responses from City Council members and yesterday representatives from the Mayor's office came to the Center to talk about sustainable funding solutions. Thank you all-keep up the great work!

47. Seattle: Court Watch volunteers needed 11/15
THREE STRIKES. Your support is needed.

Please join our Court Watch team in support of Vance Bartley

Vance Bartley has spent the last eleven years wondering if he would ever be free. In 1997 he struck out because, as he has written, I committed a crime because I had succumbed to temptation and I had an inability to take responsibility for my drug addiction. Even while dealing with the harsh reality of a life without the possibility of parole sentence, Vance never gave up on life. He has never had a major (serious) infraction in 11 years. For two years he has studied computers from Edmonds Community College and has taken a correspondence Sociology class from Ohio University. He also became a self-taught paralegal. These skills and this positive attitude contributed to Vance getting one of his strikes overturned a non-violent robbery 2 for which he served six months in jail. Not only has Vance helped himself, he generously helps others deal with the court system. Now it is our turn to support Vance by attending the hearing where the judge will re-sentencing him on the overturned third strike. Evidence of strong community support for Vance will hopefully make a big difference for him.

If you cant come to Vances hearing, there is another way you can support our 3 Strikes work. In the next few months you will hear more about this campaign. In the meantime, we could use some help researching some 3 Strikes issues. Below is one question that wed like some help with:

3 Strikes became law through Initiative 593 but Robbery 2 and Assault 2 were NOT crimes included in the original initiative. Wed like the details behind how they were added to the list of strike-able offenses later on. By whom? When? Why?

At our recent general meeting we decided to begin the search for mentors for our newly released people. Along with being supportive of the Justice Works! mission and vision, wed look for a mentor to be caring, knowledgeable, committed and a good listener. Although we are still at the beginning stages of defining our mentor program, we know that wed like it to be tailored to the individuals involved. So, after meeting each other, we envision the mentor and newly released person coming up with 3 or 4 agreements that fit their unique situation and the specific needs of the newly released person.


We can use your help.

1. Please come to our next general meeting (1/4/07 at 6:30pm at 1117 MLK Jr. Way in Seattle) if youd like to participate in the planning about mentors.

2. Speak with at least one individual or organization about their interest in learning more about becoming a mentor.

3. Share your ideas about how and where we can find mentors.

4. Let us know if youd like more information about becoming a mentor yourself.

Protect YOUR Plan B Emergency Contraception (EC) Pharmacy Investigators Needed

In a swipe at patients' rights, a federal judge has suspended two Washington State Pharmacy Board rules that require pharmacists to fill prescriptions for stocked medication, like over-the-counter Plan B, on-site; and ensure that all patients are treated professionally and respectfully. How will we respond? What can we do to protect patient access to prescriptions and women's timely access to Plan B emergency contraception?

Before we can answer these questions, we need to know what is happening with regard to Plan B in pharmacies across the state, and we need YOUR help!

Sign up today to come into our office and volunteer as a pharmacy investigator. We will provide training on how to conduct pharmacy surveys over the phone.

52. Bicycle Alliance of Washington Board Members Recruitment Notice
The Bicycle Alliance of Washington (BAW) is currently seeking candidates to fill four vacancies on its board of directors. The BAW is an alliance of bicycle clubs, advocacy groups and individual bicyclists from around the state. The BAW mission is to advocate for bicyclists and promote policies that result in adequate funding for a complete non-motorized transportation infrastructure and to ensure that bicycling is recognized and embraced as an essential component of a balanced transportation system. The Bicycle Alliance works to increase the percentage of all types of bicycle ridership in Washington, as well as to encourage communities throughout the state to become bicycle-friendly. The Bicycle Alliance acts as a statewide clearinghouse for bicycle education and advocacy.

We are seeking cyclists who can commit the time and energy to make Washington a better place for all bicyclists. Our board is actively involved in setting policies, establishing goals and actively participating in fund-raising. In addition, the BAW encourages cyclists who can bring a geographic balance and good connections within the cycling community, funding or policy making realm to join our board.

The board meets both in person and by conference call 9-10 times a year. Board members are typically involved in areas of specialization, such as fund-raising, legislation etc between board meetings.

55. Death With Dignity Initiative Seeks Volunteers
Washington State is taking a progressive and compassionate step towards improving care for terminally ill adults. A broad coalition of physicians, nurses, hospice patients, organizations and concerned residents is proposing an initiative for the 2008 ballot.

Thankfully, we have an amazing opportunity to bring this law to Washington State. But we need your help to do it! To qualify the Death with Dignity Initiative for the November ballot, over 100,000 signatures need to be collected by volunteers by June 30, 2008. 58. Nature Consortium wants tree planters in West Seattle

The Nature Consortium is currently recruiting groups and individual volunteers from all over Seattle to provide volunteer support at and participate in our Saturday Urban Forest Restoration Work Parties.

The Nature Consortium is a small non-profit organization based in West Seattle, committed to the long-term stewardship & restoration of the West Duwamish Greenbelt, the largest remaining contiguous forest within Seattle city limits.

We are seeking volunteers to provide support for other volunteers by assisting with morning check-in, bringing warm refreshments, and tagging plants. Work parties are most Saturdays from 10am-2pm, but depending on how people choose to volunteer, they can be there for the whole time or just a portion. We are also always looking for more volunteers to help with our restoration efforts, which involve tasks such as digging blackberry and pulling ivy, sheet mulching, and planting.

Here's a fun opportunity to help the Bicycle Alliance of Washington and check out this year's Bike Expo!

Bicycle Everything!

Group Health Seattle International Bicycle Expo is a complete celebration of cycling, with hundreds of exhibits and presentations on all aspects of the sport (latest and greatest in bikes, gear, organized rides, tours, cycling organizations, presentations, etc.). This year's event is slated for March 8 & 9 at the Cruise Terminal 30, 2431 East Marginal Way.

The Bicycle Alliance needs volunteers to help staff our booth. You can help us get our message out about advocacy for bicyclists and a bike-friendly Washington. We'll be handing out our brochures and newsletter, Share the Road license plate postcards, and chatting with Expo attendees about our projects and latest efforts. And for fun, before or after your volunteer shift, your "volunteer pass" will allow you to enjoy browsing all the great exhibits, lust after the latest biking gear, and hear some interesting talks!

In mid-March I will be traveling to WA DC to volunteer for an Iraq Veterans Against the War program in WA DC. It is important to me that our veterans have the support they need, both for healing and to have their voices heard about the human costs of the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan will feature testimony from U.S. veterans who served in those occupations, giving an accurate account of what is really happening day in and day out, on the ground.

The four-day event will bring together veterans from across the country to testify about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan - and present video and photographic evidence. In addition, there will be panels of scholars, veterans, journalists, and other specialists to give context to the testimony. These panels will cover everything from the history of the GI resistance movement to the fight for veterans' health benefits and support.


Ive volunteered to do whatever needs to be done at this event so that these veterans are free for workshops and testimony sessions. I also volunteered to raise $1250 to cover travel and lodging costs for at least one veteran who needs financial support to be able to attend. I hope you will be able to help with this.

A patients right to timely access to medication at the pharmacy counter, including a womans right to access birth control without hassle or delay.
The expectation that students will receive medically-accurate information in their schools.

The fundamental right of women to access the full range of reproductive healthcare decisions including access to birth control, affordable family planning care, and safe, legal abortion.

On Saturday, April 5 we'll be at caucuses starting at 10:00 a.m. in the following four locations:

71. Help monitor Anacortes ferry boarder patrol

After yesterdays meeting in Friday Harbor with Border Patrol official Giuliano, it seems necessary to continue a watchful presence at the Anacortes Ferry terminal and to try to start accurately documenting apprehensions there. It seems there have been a total of 24 detentions, not the 8 we knew of before. Many ferry workers and islanders are upset about the disruption in service this creates missed or late doctor and other appointments, etc. But the most serious effect is on Hispanic residents of the islands who may not be able to get critical health care for themselves or their children, as well as other basic needs ranging from food to car parts that are not available or not available at an affordable price on the islands. Also of concern is the beginning of spring visits by area school children to Camp Orkila on Orcas Island. Will the Border Patrol arrest Hispanic children without proof of citizenship or will the school districts have to stop those enrichment programs?

For the moment we would like to continue monitoring the situation. Today, March 19th, some of us will be at the Anacortes Ferry Terminal from 4 p.m. until about 5:30. Please come if you can. Because this is Holy Week I personally will not be able to make it out there the rest of this week. It also seems that we need to be there at other hours. Ferries come in to Anacortes at: 8:20 a.m. and 9:10 a.m.; 10:40 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 11:40 a.m.; 1:45 and 2:05; 4:40, 5:20 and 5:55; and 8 and 9:35 p.m. I would like to ask that you consider finding a buddy who can go with you to meet at the following blocks of time:

8:15 9:30
10:30 11:45
1:30 2:30
4:15 5:30 or 6:00


If you can make any of those times with your buddy over the course of this week and the next, please let me know ahead of time and, most importantly, drop me an e-mail afterwards with whatever observations you have.

Any other questions, please ask. Come today for an orientation at the ferry landing at 4 p.m.

Thank you for your attention to this alarming increase in harassment of our Hispanic neighbors and infringement on our basic rights.

With the election year upon us we need your help to get pro-choice victories up and down the ticket in Washington State by identifying pro-choice voters. This fun and easy job requires only two hours of your time and has you working from NARALs downtown Seattle office to ID pro-choice voters. By simply making a few phone calls you can help us continue to make WA State the great pro-choice state that we know and love!

75. Help push local foods in Seattle in April
Just this past legislative session, as part of the 2008 Priorities for a Healthy Washington, WEC led the successful effort to pass the Local Farms Healthy Kids bill. This new law will make it easier for schools to buy locally grown food providing markets for local farmers and nutritious, fresh local food for our children. As a package, this new law is one of the most far-reaching efforts in the nation to promote local food policy.

The local food movement is growing as we speak and there are many upcoming opportunities to learn more, and make your voice heard locally on this issue.

Seattle's City Council President Richard Conlin has proposed a Local Food Action Initiative. This initiative aims to promote local and regional food sustainability and security and in doing so, advance the goals of social justice, environmental sustainability, economic development and emergency preparedness.

Theres an exciting opportunity to learn more about local food issues coming up this week. Francis Moore Lappe, renowned author of Diet for a Small Planet, will be hosting two FREE discussions on Friday!

The National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) and the King County Sheriffs Office have joined together through the assistance of the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) to develop a training program designed to help the Sheriffs Office further develop Citizens Advisory Councils in each Precinct area. We would like your input as the training is developed. Our planning process will bring together a broad cross-section of leaders from law enforcement, faith and community-based organizations, and local business communities. Leaders in the African American, Asian and Latino communities, as well other important and culturally diverse groups, will be invited to help develop the training for the Sheriffs Office that will improve police-community relations and further develop their Citizens Advisory Councils.

The National Coalition Building Institute is a leadership development organization that was established in 1984. The NCBI approach, which includes leaders from all sectors of society, proven leadership training, and an international network of local resource teams, has proven to be essential for long-lasting social and institutional change. The effectiveness of NCBI and its teams has resulted in numerous awards, favorable media coverage, and noteworthy testimonials.

We are extending an invitation for you to attend a meeting during which NCBI leaders will be listening to you as they design a training program that takes into account the concerns of both community members and members of the Sheriffs Office. This meeting will take place next month and a representative from the Sheriffs Office will contact you in advance with the date, time and location. We have fifteen positions available for you to fill, which we would like to do with a representative cross-section of our entire Southwest Precinct community.

This training will provide a unique opportunity to develop new relationships and seek collaborative solutions to interactions between law enforcement and the community. By participating in this planning and assessment session and providing your input, you will help the members of the Citizens Advisory Council and the King County Sheriffs Office do the following:

Recognize triggers and other obstacles that prevent building relationships with community members.
Appreciate the power of personal stories from community members and to gain insight into their experiences;
Listen for and respect the emotional content in what community members express.
Use a practical conflict resolution process to find common ground in dealing with an issue that would otherwise lead to continuing tension;
Acquire a toolbox of ways to improve interpersonal communication by decreasing defensiveness, with particular attention to tone of voice and body language.

As a result of such broad cooperation, we are confident that we can build bridges that will help increase safety for community members and law enforcement and reduce conflict and tension.

Be Hotline Advocates for The Community Abortion Information & Resource (CAIR) Project!

Our Hotline Advocates:

Have a strong commitment to womens rights and a non-judgmental attitude towards womens reproductive choices
Talk to women and help them with information, referral, and financial assistance for abortions
Are on-call to take 1-4 hotline cases per month
Manage each hotline case for 1-3 hours
Hotline calls can be made during flexible hours and at the discretion of the volunteer
Attend 1 hotline training and 2 supplemental trainings
Have basic computer skills and Internet access
Commit to one year as a volunteer

Summer Writing Camp Applications Due May 23

Scribes, Hugo Houses intensive summer writing camp, is like a well stocked hardware supply for young writers. Students gather with master teachers and guest artists to write, meet each other, eat together, absorb great writers writing, walk the city and write some more. Practicing a range of forms and delving deep into voice, character, language and the senses, Scribes is rounded out with field trips and good food, a publication of all the new work generated in two weeks and a community reading. The Candidate Evaluation Committee (CEC), put on by the Municipal League of King County, is the region's only independent, non-partisan, non-agenda-driven evaluation of candidates. County Councilwoman Julia Patterson recently stated: "The Municipal League's Candidate Evaluation program is most comprehensive and unbiased interview of candidates running for office. For many, it's the most meaningful because there is no ax to grind. The Municipal League provides the region with an unduplicated service."


We are now recruiting voluntary committee members to serve on the CECyou too can take part in this outstanding process! As a Candidate Investigator, you will have the opportunity to meet the candidates, learn more about local issues and network with other civic-minded individuals.


Committee members will research and interview candidateslike a "job interview"and are committed to giving ratings in a way that's free from ideology or partisan factors. Volunteer Scientists Needed!

Every year 9th and 10th grade Biotechnology Academy students at Ballard High School give a presentation on an ethical issue in science. They prepare a speech, construct a visual aide, prepare a mathematical graphic, and present their information to their peers, teachers, and scientists from the community. We need your help! Come be a judge for this fun and exciting project!


When: Thursday & Friday, June 5th & 6th and Monday to Wednesday, June 9th to11th, 9:00-11:30 am
You can sign up for 1 or more days! I would like 3-4 scientists per day.

Where: Ballard High School, 1418 NW 65th Street

What: 9th and 10th grade biology students give a speech on an ethical topic. You judge their presentation, using a rubric given to you.

Who Can Participate: Anyone with a science background! It doesn't have to be life science, either!

85. Help NARAL with field canvassing
Here is a great way to support NARAL Pro-Choice Washington's efforts to reach as many people as possible. We have launched a new field canvassing program, in which our canvassers go door-to-door to educate the public about NARAL and choice issues that affect them, recruit new NARAL members and engage them in direct action to increase access to Plan B(R) emergency contraception at the pharmacy counter.

We just began our canvass program in March, and it has really taken off! Our canvassers have already talked to over 2,000 people about our issues and recruited 943 new members!

This program is growing, and we now need a passenger van to send our canvassers to neighborhoods outside of Seattle.

And so we are turning to our supporters: if you have a passenger van in good, working condition that you can donate to NARAL, please contact Corrigan Gommenginger at cgommenginger {at} prochoicewashington.org or (206) 624-1990.

89. Help send medical equipment to Cuba; Seattle June 15/16
The nineteenth Friendshipment to Cuba is being organized now and it needs your help.

This past year has proven all of Cuba's enemies wrong. Fidel became very ill with a serious problem with part of his vital system - and instead of Cuba coming apart at the seams, she continued along with a new constitutionally designated leader and the free health care and educational system - and life in general continued without a hiccup.

Since the last Friendshipment Seattle has enrolled a student in the free, Cuban, Latin American School of Medicine. You may remember that his name is Ramon Bernal and he and more than a thousand other students who could not afford to attend medical school in their home countries, get free tuition and room and board and books and lab fees and even a little spending money. All that they have to do is pledge that when they finish and are doctors, they will return to their home countries and serve communities that lack health care. The US has had graduates for the past three years. The first one went to New Orleans immediately to help the victims of Katrina and is now serving his internship at a hospital in New York. The participants in the Friendshipment will visit the Latin American School of Medicine.

Cuba is providing thousands of Cuban doctors to needy countries around the world and has set up medical schools in several countries where poor students can learn the art and science of medicine.

Yet, Cuba is short of many medical supplies, largely because of the inhumane blockade that has been imposed by the US, which makes some medicines and medical equipment cost much more than they would if there were normal trade relations between the US and Cuba. The Friendshipments attempt to correct some of the harm that is being done to Cuba by the blockade that has been enforced by both major parties for decades.

And it is a way to call attention to the political establishment that many-- NO-- MOST Americans do not agree with the blockade or the Travel Ban, which prevents you from going to Cuba to see for yourself how Cuba works.

Each year Seattle and dozens of other towns and cities donate surplus medicines and medical supplies and school supplies and usable sporting goods and computers to help Cuba survive and to end the travel ban and the trade blockade. Seattle always has dozens of large boxes of usable materials which join with contributions from all over the US and Canada amounting to many tons -- including some vehicles.


You can help!

*** You can apply to go on the Friendshipment. It costs $1,600 for all expenses from here to Cuba, and about a week in Cuba, and back home. If we get enough donations maybe a little financial help could be available from the Seattle/Cuba Friendship Committee or from national Pastors For Peace, who organize the Friendshipment overall.

***You can donate money to make it possible for the caravan to get from here to Cuba. With gas and diesel running near four dollars a gallon, it takes a lot of money to get the caravan and its cargo from here to Cuba

*** You can donate any crutches, wheel chairs, bikes, Pentium computers or school supplies.

In June you can help with the send off of the Caravanistas from Seattle and Canada and help to load the many boxes on the bus.

*** On June 15th you may want to join the Canadians at the Blaine border crossing to help to make sure that that portion of the aid gets into the US. There is a program and a potluck lunch organized by the Canadian Friends of Cuba. You can just hop on the Friendshipment bus anywhere from Olympia to Seattle. The bus will pick up passengers for the border @ Blaine at my house @ 09am on June 15th and take you to see the Canadian aid across the border and join in a potluck and help to load the BC aid on to the bus and bring you back to Seattle that afternoon.

*** On June 16th @ 6pm we need help to load the Seattle material aid onto the Friendship Bus in conjunction with a potluck and send-off party for the bus and the people who are going with it to Cuba. We will gather @ el Centro de la Raza, 2524 16th Ave S in the cafeteria where will enjoy a potluck. And hear from the paticipants is the Friendshipment and load the cargo for Cuba.

The July 27th Seattle Century is a premier ride offering 50 and 100 mile route options and super amenities. The Bicycle Alliance of Washington is a beneficiary of this ride.

Volunteers are needed to help make this a great ride! Folks are needed in advance of the ride to help with course marking and packet pickup. Day of volunteers are needed to assist with rest stops and serve as course marshalls, medical riders and ride along mechanics. All volunteers get a t-shirt and access to the event dinner. PHONE BANK FOR TIM KNUE THIS SUNDAY
This Sunday, July 27th we will be in NARAL Pro-Choice Washington's downtown Seattle offices, on the phone, spreading the word about Pro-Choice candidate for State Representative, Tim Knue. Tim has been a school teacher for the past 32 years and is committed to improving the state of Washington as a representative for the citizens of the 10th district.

After narrowly losing the election in 2006 to an anti-choice imcumbent, Tim is ready to win this election and move Washington forward as a state representative. NARAL has launched an exciting new program: a field canvassing operation! Our canvass team is out in local neighborhoods, recruiting new pro-choice activists and members. We started this program in March, and we already have over 2,000 new NARAL members and activists! This is critical growth of our base as we approach the 2008 elections.

After establishing a solid foundation, we're ready to expand! That means we need a car for our canvassers so they can get to new neighborhoods and towns.

URGENT! Low Voter Turnout in Primary Election!
Will this mean Pro-Choice losses in our State?

As of yesterday, only 13% of Washington State's absentee ballots have been mailed in for next Tuesday's Primary Election. This is an extraordinarily LOW TURN-OUT even for a Primary Election.

A candidate's showing in the Primary Election strongly influences the amount of resources that campaigns get for the General Election.

The Seattle AWIS Newsletter Committee is looking for writers for the 2008-2009 newsletter series! This is your opportunity to:

build your writing portfolio;
get your name in print; and
have your work read by AWIS members who represent a variety of scientific disciplines and career paths.

The newsletter is switching from a monthly to a quarterly format for 2008-2009, allowing for broader and more in-depth coverage of topics.

We are seeking both single-article writers as well as regular columnists to cover a wide variety of topics. Topics can include, but are definitely not limited to: profiles of eminent scientists, biotech/pharma industry news, science/medical news, and summaries of science-related events or
meetings. We also encourage suggestions for other topics that are likely to be of interest to Seattle AWIS members.

Seattle has found a retired teacher who has done a lot of remodeling in her life and is prepared to join the US construction brigade to help Cuba to rebuild some of the thousands of homes that were rendered unlivable by hurricanes Gustav and Ike. We are going to show a Cuban film and take up a collection soon to further aid in this revolutionary and humanitarian relief.

This is an update about the IFCO/Pastors for Peace Hurricane Relief and Reconstruction project. We are in need of your help to reach out to more people who might be interested in joining us on the Construction Brigade to Cuba. It has been almost one month since Hurricane Ike left Cuba after wreaking havoc and destroying homes and social facilities.

People all over Cuba are now in the process of a massive reconstruction effort, rebuilding infrastructure and restoring vital services. Pastors for Peace is organizing a Construction Brigade of skilled workers to join with Cuban workers in this historic reconstruction effort.

Now that we have more details in place for the Construction Brigade, we wanted to share them with you to use as you out reach to people who might be able to join us for this important time in Cuba. The Construction Brigade will be in Cuba for a two-week period between October 13 and 31st, getting to work as soon as possible. We will be working alongside Cubans in Pinar Del Rio, the Western most province of Cuba, which was hit hardest by the hurricanes.

We are looking for people to join us who are skilled carpenters, masons, electricians, plumbers, or have experience in similar construction/reconstruction efforts. Please join us in recruiting the hardest working, best prepared Brigadistas to make this the strongest Construction Brigade possible.

103. Volunteers connecting with girls interested in science
Would you like to be a role model for the next generation of girls in science and technology? Volunteer for Seattle Expanding Your Horizons!

SEYH offers middle school girls a day of career exploration in math, science, and technology. The girls attend three 55-minute workshops where they engage in hands-on science and technology activities led by professional women working in those fields. SEYH is on Saturday March 14, 2009 at Seattle University.

We're looking for women who would be interested in spending a fun and rewarding day presenting a hands-on science or technology workshop to girls. If this sounds like you or someone you know, please contact us at cliston {at} psctlt.org.

Computer Autopsy: Girls take apart computers to find out how they work.

Crime Scene Investigation: Girls work with police officers to learn how technology is used on crime scenes.

Science in Sports: Girls investigate muscles to learn how elite athletes excel at their sports.

Colder Than Ice: Girls experiment with dry ice to understand how it's used in cellular research.

How do Orange and Black Cats Differ?: Girls learn to read DNA sequences and predict a cats coat color from its genetic information.


Want to be a presenter but dont know where to start? Experienced workshop presenters are available to help you craft a fun, hands-on experience for the girls! Just let us know your name, contact information, and your area of expertise or idea for a workshop topic.

104. Training for young future officeholders
Our six-month program, starting in January 2009, will take next year's class all over our state and to Washington DC. We will hear from elected officials, former alumni, policymakers and local leaders. We're proud of our alumni - and we boast their successes whenever we can. For example, some recent graduates from the 36th District:

Former 36th'er Derek Kilmer, IDF 02, who is a economic development manager and is currently State Senator from the 26th Legislative District, working to bring voice to working families in Olympia.
Dana Laurent, IDF 08, our district's Political Chair and also Political Director for Planned Parenthood. She's responsible for implementing the most aggressive field program Planned Parenthood has ever executed to help Governor Gregoire and secure our majorities in the state House and Senate.
Kelly Drake, IDF 07, development director at the Washington Conservation Voters, and who is working to keep our elected officials green and to move pro-environment agenda forward.
Elizabeth Siegal, IDF 08, is currently a teacher at the Jewish Community School and recently went to Montana to help organize for Obama helping to increase Democratic performance there by 17% over 2004.

We have dozens and dozens of other alumni who are changing the landscape in Washington - too many to name individually. Labor leaders, congressional and council staff, campaign workers, political consultants, lawyers, policy staff, fundraisers, and engaged citizens who volunteer on campaigns or form their own political organizations. We are proud of the small part we play in these successes. Can you help us build our next great class of 2009? Do you have someone who might be interested in our program? We want 'em! IDF strongly encourages geographic, gender, sexual orientation and racial diversity. We want strong talent from all backgrounds and all parts of our state.

105. Help salvage native plants in Redmond 12/6

Help Salvage Native Plants!

Join other volunteers digging up trees and shrubs from this site scheduled for development. In the afternoon, we'll be potting up the salvaged plants so they can recuperate before going to King County habitat restoration sites. Once replanted, these native plants will help reduce erosion, shade streams and provide habitat. Special thanks to Murray Franklyn LLC for providing the salvage site.

As always, volunteers that dig for our program for at least a couple hours in the morning are welcome to stay after and dig additional plants to take home.

Volunteers that help pot up plants in the afternoon will be able to take some "thank you" plants home.

When: Saturday, December 6, 2008

Time: 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. salvage at site,
1 p.m. to 4 p.m. potting at Holding Facility
Where: Redmond Ridge near Redmond

Directions to salvage site: From I-405, I-5 or Hwy 520, drive Eastbound 520 through Redmond and continue north onto Avondale Road. Turn right (east) onto Novelty Hill Road. Turn right (south) onto Eastridge Dr. NE. Watch for signs directing you to the site.

Not a morning person? Volunteers also needed at our Native Plant Holding Facility from 12:30 until 4:00 to help pot up the salvaged plants.

From I-5 or I -405, take I-90 east to Highland Drive exit (exit 18) in Issaquah. Stay left on the off ramp to continue onto Highland Dr. Drive through several lights. Turn right onto IssaquahFall City Road. Just past Endeavor Elementary School, stay straight onto Duthie Hill Road. The holding facility is in Duthie Hill Park (on the right) 27101 Duthie Hill Road.

Notes: A parent or guardian must accompany volunteers under 16 years old. Dress for the weather and be prepared to get dirty. Sturdy shoes or boots are recommended. We'll provide gloves, tools and light refreshments.

We look forward to seeing a great group of holiday cyclists at 1pm on Thursday December 18th. It's fun and you can make a difference for cycling in your state!

The workparty is at the Bicycle Alliance office, 311 3rd Ave S in Pioneer Square in Seattle.

107. Bicycle Alliance looking for board members
Bicycle Alliance Seeking New Board Members
The Bicycle Alliance of Washington is seeking members from around the state to serve on its Board of Directors.

This is an opportunity to help lead the only organization devoted to bicycle advocacy in the state. The Board is responsible for creating vision, setting overall policy, ensuring implementation of programs, and fiscal oversight. As a Board member, you will serve on committees, participate in fundraising, provide technical and professional advice, and participate in advocacy efforts. Board members serve a 3-year term and the full Board meets quarterly.

Interested parties can make inquiries and applicants should submit a letter of interest with credentials to BAWboard@bicyclealliance.org by January 15, 2009.


The Board of Directors Has the Following Responsibilities:

Program: Ensure implementation of programs
Policy: Set overall policy, operation and direction
Finances: Ensure financial accountability
Fundraising: Ensure Bicycle Alliance has resources to meet its goals
Management: Ensure sound management
Personnel: Determine terms of staff employment and set policies relating to firing and supervision


Each member of the board has the following responsibilities

Membership: Maintain active dues-paying membership status
Attendance: Attend board meeting regularly. If unable to attend, make sure that proxy is conveyed.
Participation: Serve on committees and/or as an officer
Fundraising: Actively participate in fundraising activities
Consultation: Provide technical and professional advice
Advocacy: Participate in advocacy efforts
