Living in Northern Virginia one has many opportunities to receive the GOP talking points direct from the horse's mouth. Whip open the "Winchester Star" and one reads of their support of torture, war, warrant-less wire taping and various other nefarious anti-American 'shrub government' activities.
When it come to support the needs of the people, then things change. I really do wonder just where the establishment lives.
On 30 November 2007 the "Winchester Star" published, "Toward utopia Health care an inalienable right?"
http://www.winchesterstar.com/article_details.php?ArticleID=2931My Letter to the editor in response to their "Opinion" piece follows:
How dare you attack my government with your editorial "Toward utopia Health care an inalienable right? "(30 November 2007) Just where does the editorial board of the Winchester Star live?
Perhaps where you live, the government, which Winchester Star supported so blindly over the past seven years, cannot be trusted to do the right thing for the people. It is after all the same irresponsible and unaccountable government that has given US blatant corruption, incompetence and privatization. When you take your jaded views and experiences to cast aspirations against my government, then you go too far.
My government is made up of good hard working, honest, public service spirited people from Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland as well as the many states of these United States of America. It is government of responsibility and accountability.
Should my governments make a mistake, as a responsible citizen I make an effort to correct the mistake by staying involved. I do not throw my hands up, walk away saying government cannot do it and try to pass the buck to another through privatization. Your grossly simplified “Private sector good, government bad” is a sorry try to defend another failed privatized effort, unaccountable health care insurance.
...”We can all recognize the justice in being denied treatment when the money goes for the essential care of others.”
“Oh boy, try selling that schlock to someone with a rare disease ... who is told by some government bureaucrat ...” The ‘schlock’ is better today when (someone is) “denied treatment when the money goes” to the profit of the private insurance company?! I think not.
Your sophistry knows no shame (or is it your ignorance showing?). Asking - “... aside from the fact that nowhere in this nation’s founding documents can any such supporting evidence be found - ...” Precisely next to the right of universal free education for all, the jewel in the crown of our great free society. It should be clear that a child who does not receive adequate health care, like a child who does not receive an adequate education, does not have the same chances in life as children who get both education and health care.
Staggering costs of education are paid by the citizens who benefit from being a part of a well-educated society. The costs of universal health care will also be carried by the same citizens who benefit from a being part of a healthy society.
So snarky Winchester Star dares asks it readers, “Whose shoulders should delivery of that “right” rest?” Precisely ‘We the people’ is your answer; and through our government!
It is where I live, the American way to offer free education because it's the only way to ensure every child gets an education. USA should guarantee health care to every child, for the same reason. Giving every child a fair chance is the American way.
Isn’t it time for Winchester Star to join the people of the valley again?

I do not expect anything to come of my LTTE but I had to have my say. Government is not going away. The people have to control and run 'the people's' government or risk having their government control and run them!
Thank you.
