Kellam apologizes for assaulting woman 28 years ago

VIRGINIA BEACH — Democratic congressional candidate Phil Kellam publicly apologized today for assaulting a woman 28 years ago, saying he lost his temper and behaved badly but did not physically touch the victim.

~snip~

On Thursday, an Internet blog reported that Kellam pleaded guilty to assaulting a woman in 1978 while he was a student at Elon College in North Carolina.

Kellam’s campaign accused the campaign of Kellam’s opponent, U.S. Rep. Thelma Drake, of feeding the 1978 information to the blogger.

On Friday, Drake’s communication’s director, Drew Lankford, said Drake should consider firing her campaign manager, Tim Murtaugh, for digging up the dirt. "This hits a new low," Lankford said.

Lankford said Murtaugh’s claim that he did not dig up the information was "a smokescreen. He was involved."

"Update: The Virginian-Pilot is reporting that Kellam says my post was libelous. The Daily Press is also reporting that the candidate is turning this around on me."

1. another GOP smear attempt against Kellam
'relationship' with that 'liberal group MoveOn' - puh-leeze
he got talking points from them?
This Thelma Drake must be a dirt bag.

A Kellam win would be a Democratic pick up.
Of course, the Kellam name goes way back in Beach political history.
i.e., Sydney Kellam; Kellam High School

GOP questions Kellam's contact with MoveOn

VIRGINIA BEACH - The city's Republican Party chairman said Wednesday he will ask the Federal Election Commission to investigate Phil Kellam's relationship with the liberal group MoveOn.

~snip~

Also Wednesday, Reuters news service released a poll that shows Kellam leading U.S. Rep. Thelma Drake by 4 percentage points in the race for Virginia's 2nd Congressional District.

The poll, conducted Sept. 25 to Oct. 2 by Reuters/Zogby, has a margin of error of 4.5 points.

Smith's request for an FEC investigation resulted from a request he made in July for hundreds of e-mails from Kellam's office. Kellam is the Virginia Beach revenue commissioner.

Smith said that one e-mail shows Kellam is a member of MoveOn and received "talking points" from the organization concerning Kellam's campaign.

The e-mail, from the national MoveOn office, addressed Kellam as "Dear MoveOn member." It is the same e-mail that anyone on MoveOn's mailing list gets, including journalists.

Smith said he would complain to the FEC that there was "improper coordination between the Kellam campaign, the Democratic Party and MoveOn.org."

"They are fishing in a dry hole," said Drew Lankford, Kellam's communications director. "They are getting desperate, and it is starting to show."

2. Hey cos !
That story was shut down fast because of BearingDrift's lazy stupidity of NOT fact-checking (rule #1 if you want to be a credible blogger!) and a possible libel suit by the Kellam campaign/Virginian Pilot.

Unfortunately that little goody didn't make the front page!

From now til Nov 7, I highly recommend staying on top of Virginia Pols through the state and local blogs right now.

http://www.vbdems.blogspot.com/ - Kellam's district and beyond :)

http://www.raisingkaine.com/frontPage.do - the state and all the rest --> links to all the districts and Virginia Bloggers.

Not to worry, we even have the A-Team covered !!!
