The new Appalachian Voices blog is up and running! We will be covering daily environmental, cultural, and political news for Virginia, and the entire Appalachian Region.

Our main focuses are on ending mountaintop removal coal-mining, clean air, and sustainable forestry. We will, however, be covering a wide range of issues.

1. Welcome to DU, faithfull!

I went a year to Clinch Valley College in Wise, VA. I have a soft spot in my heart for that area of the country. I was always disturbed by seeing the pretty mountains I loved totally removed. I also knew people who were affected by the horrible environmental and industrial decisions in that area.

I wish you well. Hope to see your native son, Jim Webb in the Senate in the fall. And let's keep fighting the good fight that was started with Harry Caldwell's "Night Falls on the Cumberlands". I know that Appalachian people are not the bigots who would cheer Allen on, those were probably mine owners. SW Va had some of the most devoted young Democrats I ever saw when I was in college in the 70's.

2. Webb

I recently drove the the Clinch Valley on my way from TN up to Buckhannon, WV. BEAUTIFUL country!
Webb is a dream candidate for Virginia. I love him (as a candidate!). Id also LOVE to see him take Allen to the cleaners.

Mountain progressives are a hardnosed bunch. My county went for Kucinich with 51% in the dem primary in 2004. Its really exciting up here, thats for sure. Im also really excited about the race down in NC-11 with Heath SHuler and Charles Taylor. Taylor sucks! So, i hope that goes well.
