I'm moving to Virginia. Can't wait.
Well after five and a half years and two tours of Iraq, I am finally leaving Georgia this month for Ft Eustis and will live in Newport News. I am excited and would like to know more about politics in that part of the state. Anyone with some good info on the district and the senators from that great state living in VA right now?

Thank you

1. Here's your member of Congress-Bobby Scott,D - the best we've got

Thank the good lord for him.

Statewide, it's moderate conservative Democrat versus Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell Republicans. No choice on election day becasue the Robertson people (head quartered in VA Beach, just down the road from you) are a nightmare.

Virginia needs a populist alternative within the Democratic Party. Even absent that, the trend here is Democratic and should continue that way.

Enjoy!

2. Welcome aboard GA Democrat!...
In terms of Senators we have the racist fuckwit George Allen, and John Warner, who despite being a Republican seems to be one of the few relatively honest ones with some measure of integrity.

We have an asshat infested Repuke legislature, which does nothing but legislate socially conservative issues and mess with the budget. But Tim Kaine appears to be doing a decent job keeping them in check. Mark Warner was a master at it.

Hopefully we'll have Allen out in November!

:hi:

3. Welcome to beautiful VA!!
Newport News/Tidewater area is great, esp. for younger people - recreation possibilities are everywhere and the seafood .... well, you'll see! Political outlook in Tidewater tends to be more or less balanced - at least Democrats don't get shouted out of the room just for expressing an opinion. Like Northern VA, the standard of living, educational levels, household incomes are far better than in many other areas of the state.

Be prepared for traffic congestion to drive you nuts, especially during the summer.

All in all, you're probably going to love it.

4. Welcome home and thanks for your service! Welcome to VA.
I'm in NoVA and my sister's family lives in VA Beach (Rethug, unfortunately :-)). I love living here (though NoVA and Tidewater are getting very expensive, and as another poster indicated, the traffic is bad). VA is beautiful, but we could use some turnover in our Senators. John Warner is a bit more reasonable and respectable than Allen. We have a good Dem governor.

6. I would have agreed about John Warner before 2003
but now he's just another GOP Senator ignoring torture, renditions, corruption, contaminated water for servicemen, lack of body armor, abuse of the Guard, and a whole host of other problems cutting the legs out from under our military. He used to care, what happened to him?

8. he's always been far from what he should be but my only point
was that George Allen is the worst excuse for a Senator one could have--so by definition Warner isn't as bad.

5. I think you'll like VA...
but you might have to change your DU handle (and sorry, but my sister already has VADemocrat).

I live in Williamsburg and work in NN so I get stuck in the Fort Useless traffic a lot.

Bobby Scott might be you Representative, and he ROCKS. I've met him a few times and he is just great. Unfortunately you might also have JoAnn Davis (R-Bootlicker). She is my Rep and is just awful.

IM or PM me if you need any help learning your way around.

11. yeah
I know I have to change my handle but how do I do that now? I think it's too late for that. From everything I've read, Virginia sounds like it could go blue in 2006 so that's great news. I'm tired of living in a red state like Georgia but to be honest, it was great living in Savannah area. It was a surprisingly blue dot on a red map.

Thanks and I will look you up.

12. You'll love Virginia
The legislature is Republican and scary, but it won't be that way for long -- the way they screwed up the budget this year, fighting amongst themselves, will make EVERYONE pull a lever for a Democrat in the next election. Everyone here I talk to is over them. You're coming at the right time.

14. down the road in Hampton
it's a bit of a political AYCE buffet in the Tidewater area. Fortuantely, a lot of people in the area tend to view the political spectrum in its entirety, instead of simply clinging to whatever ideology catches their fancy.

On a lighter note, you're moving at an oppurtune time, as most of the major construction on I-64 is finished.
