Bush will attend a $5,000-per-person lunch reception May 19 at the home of Eleanor and Bob Stanton on First Court Road , according to an invitation obtained by The Virginian-Pilot.
It is the second high-profile visit by a Bush administration official for Drake this year, as Republicans attempt to shore up candidates who face stiff challenges from Democrats intent on taking control of the House of Representatives. Vice President Dick Cheney spoke at a Drake fundraiser in February at the Hilton Norfolk Airport .
The president’s visit comes at a time when Bush’s poll numbers for job approval are at an all-time low nationally, hovering between 33 and 34 percent, according to Brad Coker, managing director of Mason-Dixon Polling & Research .
Coker said Thursday that no polling has been done in Virginia since the governor’s race in the fall, when Bush’s popularity in Virginia “was clearly declining.” Coker estimated Bush’s approval rating in the state now at about 40 percent .
