What's in a Name? "Forrest" Allen
Within the past week The New Republic posted two articles discussing Sen. George Allen's decades long love affair with the Confederacy. Much of it I already knew, having gone to high school with Allen in California. Some of the personal details about the abuse he heaped on his siblings was new.

Readers responded to the articles on the site, and one poster, in particular, stood out. He (or she) asked if anyone knew how Allen came to name his only son Forrest.

I got to thinking about it and googled "Forrest Confederacy." Bingo. General Nathan Forrest, Confederate hero and an early Grand Wizard of the KKK.

What kind of a person would name a child after a KKK Grand Wizard? Maybe the same kind who would deface his school with racist graffiti and deny the racist part when facing the voters.

Virginians, the reelection of Sen. Allen means a possible Presidential bid. Virginia and the country can and have to do better.

1. I am aware of Nathan Bedford Forrest
He not only was part of the group of confederate veterans that formed the Klan in Pulaski, Tennensee but he also committed war crimes against Black Union troops. Allen really is a piece of work. I hope whoever we nominate for the senate beats him.

3. Editorial in the Virginian-Pilot....
Allen’s Rebel artifacts haunt his rise

George Allen has a problem, which he’s gamely trying to remedy.

The problem centers on race. Simply put, is the GOP presidential aspirant and U.S. senator from Virginia a racist? Or not?

In our view, not.

But that’s not the complete answer, because Allen’s embrace of Confederate symbols and Southern mythology throws open a window into his character.

An article in the May 8 edition of The New Republic fuels a fire that has blazed and subsided, only to blaze again, numerous times over the years.

There’s the matter of the Confederate flag that hung on the wall of Allen’s home in Charlottesville, until he took it down in prelude to the 1993 gubernatorial race. Ditto the noose that hung on an office ficus tree.

5. Interesting....Thanks for sharing...What
is puzzling is how they are so quick to label Allen not a racist in spite of all evidence to the contrary.

Especially the comments that follow. Looks more like a Webb bash-fest, than discussing Allen, but I just don't understand dems (?) who bash the guy who actually has a chance to beat Allen.
