Why Rick Perry's presidential bid is toast

(CNN) -- Rick Perry is really starting to annoy me.

When Rick Perry announced he was running for president back on August 13, to tell you the truth I got a little excited.

Now I know what you're thinking -- James you are a big Democrat, why on earth would you be excited about Perry running for president? And as Ricky used to tell Lucy -- I got some 'splainin to do.

This was my thinking: Perry would get in and he would be a major force. After all he was governor of the state of Texas, great hair, been around politics for a while.

1. I don't think he's toast yet

The sun is setting, but he's got millions in the bank and organization that Cain doesn't have. He will stick around until well into spring, I believe, when the GOP primaries cease being proportionate and move to winner-take-all. This portends a long fight to the nomination for Romney and not-Romney (whether that is Cain or Perry or someone else).

What would be real fun is if they went all the way to their convention without the nominee settled, and a floor fight ensued. With the Paulites standing somewhere on the outside looking in and contemplating a Libertarian bid.:evilgrin:

Business Insider called it the “Bizarre Video of Rick Perry That Everyone is Talking About.” Fox News linked to the YouTube sensation, a compilation of the giddiest moments from the speech, saying it shows “Perry Uncorked in One of His Wildest Speeches Yet.”

You didn’t think the Daily Show’s Jon Stewart was just going to let Gov. Rick Perry’s bizarre Friday speech in New Hampshire pass right by without taking a swing, did you?

In the speech, Perry giggles at his own jokes, is particularly animated, sways back and forth and over-reacts with joy when given a bottle of maple syrup by his hosts.

Stewart: “Best case scenario: That dude’s hammered. Worst case scenario: That is Perry sober, and every time we’ve seen him previously, he’s been hammered. Or, there is one other explanation. Rick Perry just got back from the dentist.”

Remember how the media crucified Howard Dean for being "passionate" I mean they really destroyed his bid that year just for being excited. Rick Perry is calling his speech "passionate" why isn't the main stream media totally trashing him too?

Does Rick Perry have a passion dealer? I would like access to whatever results in a speech like this. It looks essentially like alcohol, or the combination of alcohol with horse tranquillizers, but apparently it’s all natural.

They say to be careful not to drink to excess because you will embarrass yourself in public by saying stupid things, pulling asinine faces, and making your shoulders dance. It turns out that you should avoid "passion" for the same reason.

The last time Rick Perry was what Mark Miner called “passionate,” he called Ben Bernanke treasonous. This time, he wiggled and waggled and generally acted like a George W. Bush impersonator from mid-2000’s SNL.

Cain Accuser Got a Year’s Salary in Severance Pay

The National Restaurant Association gave $35,000 — a year’s salary — in severance pay to a female staff member in the late 1990s after an encounter with Herman Cain, its chief executive at the time, made her uncomfortable working there, three people with direct knowledge of the payment said on Tuesday.

The woman was one of two whose accusations of sexual harassment by Mr. Cain, now a Republican candidate for president, led to paid severance agreements during his 1996-99 tenure as the association’s chief. Disclosure of the cases has rocked Mr. Cain’s campaign just as he was surging in polls.

Further challenging Mr. Cain, a lawyer for the second woman called on the restaurant association to release her from a confidentiality agreement signed as part of her settlement, raising the prospect that she could publicly dispute Mr. Cain’s account of what happened.

13. More than a third of Texans say Perry's campaign is hurting the state's image

Perry repeatedly cites his stewardship over the robust Texas economy as a fundamental selling point in presidential bid. But the poll, by the University of Texas and The Texas Tribune, found that 65 percent of those surveyed credited Texas' economic success to long-standing advantages such as natural resources, a constitutionally mandated balanced budget and the absence of a state income tax.

Twenty-one percent said Perry's leadership helped Texas fare better than the rest of the country, citing his adherence to lower taxes, lenient regulation and small government.

The survey also found that Texans are divided over whether Perry's first national campaign is having an effect on Texas' image outside the state. Thirty-seven percent say it has hurt the state's image, 34 percent say it has had no effect, and 19 percent say it has helped the state's image. The poll's margin of error was plus or minus 3.46 percentage points.

FORT WORTH -- Texas House Speaker Joe Straus said Tuesday that Texas was subjected to "an assault on higher education" this year from critics of how Texas universities finance academic research, an issue that was championed by Gov. Rick Perry.

An intense debate on the future of public higher education erupted this year when Perry appointed a new chairman to the UT System board of regents with a record of dismissing much academic research.

In a wide-ranging interview with the Star-Telegram Editorial Board, Straus said he agreed with many of the goals touted by critics in the debate, such as promoting greater efficiency at the schools, but was concerned about how its tenor affected the state's image.

Is Perry Toast?

Almost immediately after what will probably be remembered as the Bill Buckner moment of primary debates, when Texas Gov. Rick Perry literally forgot which governmental agencies he would cut and concluded his answer with a sheepish “Oops,” Mr. Perry’s stock on the betting market Intrade dropped in half. Tabbed as having about a 9 percent chance of winning the Republican nomination before the debate, the market revised his odds downward to 4 percent just moments after the gaffe.

I know it looks bad for Mr. Perry — but he still has some things working in his favor, like money, a good team of advisers surrounding him, and his impressive jobs credentials down in Texas. Assuming that the gaffe causes some further slippage in his polling, might there be time for him to come back as well?

Here’s the problem for Mr. Perry: There isn’t all that much time left. Iowa will vote less than two months from today, with New Hampshire and South Carolina following on its heels. This is about the point in time at which voters, donors, and party officials need to think tactically, betting on a horse who they think can win. Thus, Mr. Perry’s demise could be a self-fulfilling prophecy: If everyone thinks he is going to lose, he almost certainly will.

My guess is that some Republicans will be inclined to step in, look at the stuggles of Mr. Perry and Mr. Cain, and declare Mitt Romney the winner by a T.K.O. That may or may not go over well with voters, but Mr. Romney could begin to consolidate his support in the party establishment.

Perry is fifth in Iowa

The top four Republican presidential candidates are bunched closely together at the top of a new Bloomberg poll.

Unfortunately for Gov. Rick Perry, however, he’s in fifth place.

The poll puts businessman Herman Cain in first place among Iowans likely to participate in the state’s GOP caucuses on Jan. 3, with 20 percent support. Following Cain are U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas at 19 percent, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 18 percent and former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich at 17 percent.

Perry is next at 7 percent.
