I heard my first Tom Leppert Republican senatorial primary commercial today. Leppert, like most Texas Republican ultras, trots out the usual right-wing cardboard-cutout bogeymen he holds responsible for the recession: "career politicians," trial lawyers, "excessive regulation," "excessive taxation," blah, blah, blah.
It is a crying shame that it is this minority of hard-right reactionaries so out of step with the sentiments of the majority of Texas citizens who gets to set our state's agenda--because all too many Texas residents either vote for the prettiest candidate or don't bother to vote at all.
It's time that non-voting Texans realize that right-wingers operate on the basis that silence means consent. The non-voters' non-participation in Texas election is seen by right-wingers as a green light for Texas ultra-conservatives' most regressive policies and legislation.
