Perry now 6th in Iowa, poll says

A new poll shows Gov. Rick Perry has continued a precipitous decline in support in Iowa, a state that once held the promise of a momentum-building victory to open the GOP primary season.

Perry’s sixth-place finish in the latest Rasmussen Reports poll of likely caucus participants was a sharp decline from an early September survey that showed Perry leading with support from 29 percent of Iowa Republicans. A telephone poll taken Wednesday showed Perry’s support down to 7 percent.

Herman Cain led the latest poll with support from 28 percent of those surveyed, followed by Mitt Romney with 21 percent. U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, was third with 10 percent, trailed by Newt Gingrich at 9 percent and Michele Bachmann at 8 percent.

Poll: Perry Down To 5 Percent Support In Nevada, State Returns To Romney

A few short months ago, Texas Gov. Rick Perry was moving to the front of the Republican primary, taking early state polling with him. The Nevada caucuses were no different — Perry had a five point lead there at the very end of August, with 29 percent of Republicans. Now that Perry’s campaign has fallen off nationwide, Nevada GOPers have followed suit: Perry is polling at just five percent there, nearly eight times less than Romney’s current 38.

Perry’s issue is much like his problems in other surveys: he was found to be extremely unpopular with GOP voters, where he was seen favorably by only 25 percent of the party faithful in Nevada, against 58 percent who see him unfavorably. Romney and current second place finisher, businessman Herman Cain with 26 percent support in the caucus trial heat, have sky-high favorability ratings, both men nearly hitting the nearly seventy percent.

Santorum is first to whack Perry over skipping debates

Rick Santorum was the first among the GOP candidates to thump Rick Perry for telegraphing he may skip some of the fall debates, which we were the first to report on yesterday.

“I thought Texas governors were supposed to be tough. How can Gov. Perry expect anyone to trust he can take on Obama and the Democratic machine, when he thinks debating his fellow Republicans is too tough?" said Santorum spokesman Hogan Gidley. "This just shows he doesn't have what it takes to lead the American people in taking back our Country in 2012.”


Later, at an education forum sponsored by the College Board and News Corp. in Manhattan, Santorum himself went further, saying, "Hiding from the public by skipping debates and skipping forums is trying to hide the ball."

"I would never skip a debate," he said, adding that Perry was trying to "hide behind $15 million" of "slick ads."
