Poll: Perry Trails Obama In Texas
Talking Points Memo 6/29/11

Poll: Perry Trails Obama In Texas

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has reportedly been eyeing the race for the Republican presidential nomination -- but Texas isn't eyeing him for president, according to new survey from Public Policy Polling (D).

Indeed, the poll shows Perry trailing President Obama in heavily Republican Texas, which last voted Democratic for president in 1976, when Jimmy Carter was the South's favorite son. Obama leads 47%-45%, even though Obama's net approval rating is underwater at 42%-55%. Of course, this could potentially change if Perry actually became the nominee in a real election, but it's not a good starting point.

The poll found Perry's approval rating at only 43%, with 52% disapproval. In addition, the poll asked simply: "Do you think Rick Perry should run for president next year, or not?" The result was only 33% saying he should run, to 59% saying he should not.

From the news of the unbelievable. How many times did we hear Perry could potentially lose the race for Governor from the pollsters?

Again this is more proof that Texas voters are bi-polar. How the hell did they re-elect Perry when they had a perfectly good alternative in Bill White?

Where are these virtual voters when it comes to real elections in Texas!

1. How come everyone thinks elections in Wisconsin, Ohio and Florida are crooked,
but Texas elections are completely honest?

You said, "Again this is more proof that Texas voters are bi-polar. How the hell did they re-elect Perry when they had a perfectly good alternative in Bill White?"

Texas was not only very Democratic until Karl Rove got Dubya elected Governor over the very popular incumbent Ann Richards, but since then thousands upon thousands of Californians and "yankees" have moved here.

Meanwhile, our Hispanic population grows apace.

So how come Texas "votes" so lopsidedly Republican?

I suppose Republicans could be more crooked in Ohio and Wisconsin and Florida than in Texas, but it's hard to imagine how, since this is Karl Rove's home base.

I believe Republicans will do whatever they can get away with to win, and it is as easy as pie to get away with fraud in Texas.

Please don't blame the Texas voters for these Republican "victories".

2. Electronic voting
This has always been an issue with me. Paperless, unverifiable electronic voting.

And yes you are right - if voting fraud is rampant in Texas, the repukes are getting away with it wholesale! :grr:

3. the reason Rick Perry won was because it was 2010
no republican (except for rare circumstances like Anh Cao) was going to be unseated in 2010, it was just too good of a republican year. However, in a better democratic year, Rick Perry would probably get unseated. He underperformed all the other republicans on the statewide ticket and even ran a half a % below John McCain, even with low turnout. In a high turnout election, White could very well unseat him. I'm not from Texas, but I've got the impression that a lot of people (Republican included) don't like Perry.

4. The tsunami of 2010
I understand your points. I know 2010 was a huge tea party tsunami that hit the whole country and Texas was not exempt from that. That prick Perry got lucky and he rode that tidal wave back into re-election.

I really would love to have seen it turn-around for us in 2006. It was a better year for Democrats and Perry's poll numbers sucked and yet the asshole pulled a rabbit out of his ass and got re-elected in a 3 way race with less than 40% of the vote.

We can't win for trying on this guy. Which is why some of us are nervous to send him down the road to the national level. We do not want this asshole to stand a chance at winning the White House and the only way to assure that is to make sure he does not win the republican nomination.

5. I would want Perry to win the GOP nomination
sure americans are stupid but they aren't this stupid. I mean you can use the Reagan example all you want, but that was a different time and Perry is a lot more of an idiot than Reagan ever was. I mean he's running neck and neck with Obama in his home state. He would be just as much of a joke as Barry Goldwater was.

6. How Will Texas Political Schizophrenia Manifest In The Next Election?
I can't help but wonder how the Texas political schizophrenia will manifest in the next election. I know the hard-core right will turn out in droves to vote for whatever lunatic the GOP nominates (I suspect it'll be Michelle Bachmann), but I wonder if all these guys and gals who think President Obama is doing an OK job will actually VOTE?

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the slackers got off their backside, registered to vote, and turned Texas electoral votes bonny-blue next year?

7. "Texas political schizophrenia"
We may have discovered a new malady in Texas voters.

I have no idea how this plays out. You would hope that those people that were the mad tea party types didn't get what they wanted and they should react in anger at the people they elected last time.

I'd like to see higher voting and registration numbers in Texas. We now rank dead last among the states in eligible turnout. :(
