GOP House Members Join Dems to Applaud Obama

For a rare moment, Republicans in the lower chamber set aside their anti-Washington rhetoric and joined their Democratic colleagues to congratulate President Barack Obama for ordering the military action that led to the death of Osama bin Laden.

A motion by state Rep. Joe Farias, D-San Antonio, a veteran, to suspend the necessary posting rules to recognize House Resolution 1694, was greeted with raucous applause from House members and spectators in the gallery. Farias and state Rep. Garnet Coleman, D-Houston, are joint authors of the resolution.

"The president's patience, leadership, wisdom, and determination have led directly to the demise of the most wanted man in the world, and have hardened this nation’s resolve to defeat the forces of malevolent fanaticism," the resolution states.

The resolution stands in stark contrast to a statement issued earlier today by Gov. Rick Perry, who did not mention either Obama or President George W. Bush.

As Farias addressed the floor, he was flanked and applauded by some of the president’s fiercest critics, including state Rep. Leo Berman, R-Tyler, who is also a veteran. State Rep. Jim Keffer, R-Eastland, made the motion to add all members’ names to the resolution. He said that when the terrorist attacks occurred in 2001, Democrats and Republicans rallied around Bush. It was time to show the same respect to the country’s current leader, he said.

:wow: Leo Berman (birther) actually re-entered the realm of sanity, if only for a brief moment.

Kudos Representative Joe Farias and Representative Garnet Coleman! :applause::applause::applause:

4. Embedded video won't show up but the link will work
Video embed code will only work on DU in the Video forum.

But the link is good for the video. Farias is a good guy, he really does break down at the end there with emotion.

10. Some lawmakers didn't back resolution praising Obama

Some lawmakers didn't back resolution praising Obama

Ten Republican members of the Texas House this week opposed a resolution commending President Barack Obama, as well as intelligence and military personnel, for planning and executing the operation to kill Osama bin Laden.

The Texas House resolution, sponsored by Democrats, was effusive in its praise for the president.

(snip)
None of the 10 lawmakers who registered their opposition to the resolution in the House Journal is from the greater Austin area.

"I support our troops, but cannot support a resolution commending Obama's domestic handling of affairs," Rep. Randy Weber of Pearland, one of the Republicans recorded as voting against the resolution, said in a statement entered into the House journal.

Another 52 Republican lawmakers did not vote against the resolution but put a joint statement into the journal taking issue with some of it.

Ass hats!
