Dallas Crowd Blasts County Judge, Decision To Replace Elections Administrator
A bipartisan crowd grew angry Friday as Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins convened a closed door meeting and accepted the resignation of elections administrator Bruce Sherbet.

Sherbet says he resigned his job of 24 years on Thursday because Jenkins and County Commissioner John Wiley Price were working behind the scenes to replace him and Sherbet didn't want to work in a hostile environment.

...

A crowd of democrats and republicans wearing "Keep Bruce Sherbet" shirts waited as County Judge Clay Jenkins convened a closed door meeting of the Dallas County Elections Commission. The commission hadn't met for 24 years and its only function is to hire and fire the elections administrator. Democratic precinct chair Paula Leone believed Sherbet was about to get the shaft.

Leone: It goes without saying Bruce Sherbet is internationally known for being phenomenal at his work. I think he's being railroaded. It's hard to say why. It looks on the surface as though Clay Jenkins is doing John Wiley Price's bidding and that's very disconcerting.

1. Thats so sad - Sherbert is a good guy
From the limited dealings I've had with him and seen him testify before elections committee, he seemed very knowledgeable and fair. :(

2. The general feeling is that there are shenanigans involved
I think the suspicion is that John Wiley Price wants to replace Sherbet with someone in his own pocket. Sherbet was a really fair and thoughtful guy.

4. JWP reminds me of a funny song I once heard
Oh, Sister Josephine
What do all these policemen mean?
By coming to the convent in their grim limousines
After Sister Josephine
While you, Sister Josephine
You sit with your boots up on the altar screen
And smoke one last cigar
What a funny nun you are

The policemen say that Josephine's a terrorist in disguise
Big fat Norman, fifteen years on the run
The sisters can't believe it, no that can't be Josephine
Just think of all her tenderness towards the younger nuns

Oh, Sister Josephine
They're searching the chapel where you've been seen
The nooks and the crannies of the nuns' canteen
After Sister Josephine
While you, Sister Josephine
Take a farewell swig of Benedictine
Before your
au revoir
What a funny nun you are

Admittedly her hands are big and hairy
And emblazoned with a curious tattoo
Admittedly her voice is on the deep side
And she seems to shave more often than the other sisters do

Oh, Sister Josephine
Founder of the convent sumo team
They're leafing through your stacks of
Playboy magazines
After Sister Josephine
While you, Sister Josephine
Give a farewell whiff of Benzedrine
To the convent budgerigar
What a funny nun you are

No more will her snores echo through chapel during prayers
Nor her lustful moaning stir the stilly nights
No more empty bottles of altar wine come clanking from her cell
No longer will the cloister toilet seat stand upright

Oh, Sister Josephine
Slipping through their fingers like margerine
Dressed only in your boxer shorts and a rosary
What a funny nun you seem to be

5. I was afraid something like this would happen
I voted for Larry Duncan for County Judge, and was suspicious from day one about Clay Jenkins--a virtual unknown in Dallas County--and his support from John Wiley Price. Looked to me like JWP was setting up a sock puppet to do his bidding, but I hoped it wouldn't turn out that way. But now look what we have--a perfectly decent, honest, fair elections administrator ousted for...what?

Thanks a lot, John Wiley Price and Clay "Howdy Doody" Jenkins for making the Democratic Party look like a bunch of vindictive partisan hacks. :puke:

6. Effort to oust Sherbet shows how not to govern
http://www.dallasnews.com/opinion/editorials/20110131-editorial-effort-to-oust-sherbet-shows-how-not-to-govern.ece#_Toc284326210">Dallas Morning News 1/31/11
Editorial: Effort to oust Sherbet shows how not to govern

(snip)
Lesson No. 1: Don’t “fix” a problem that doesn’t exist. The first thing to know about this crisis in the elections department is that there was no crisis. This was a melodrama of County Judge Clay Jenkins’ making, a blindside attack on the elections chief. As everyone from low-level election workers to high-profile politicos has confirmed, Sherbet was a standout elections administrator. He was respected, responsive and nonpartisan beyond reproach.

Jenkins’ effort to oust Sherbet suggests that a neutral umpire isn’t what Democratic leaders desire in an elections chief. Jenkins and his allies might have gotten their wish when Sherbet reluctantly resigned. But the ensuing outrage confirms that Jenkins’ credibility and confidence in his leadership have taken a significant hit.

Lesson No. 2: There’s plenty of blame to go around. Most of the public ire has rightly focused on Jenkins and County Commissioner John Wiley Price, who reportedly initiated the dump-Sherbet machinations. But Tax Assessor-Collector John Ames and County Clerk John Warren were complicit in this imprudent exercise. Both cast votes against reappointing Sherbet at Friday’s Election Commission meeting.

7. My husband's joke about Clay Jenkins
My husband and I were scraping ice off the porch this morning, and I said I was being extra careful not to fall down on the ice and break my leg like Clay Jenkins did. Then, he came up with this gem:

"Why did Clay Jenkins fall on the ice and break his leg? 'Cause John Wiley Price wasn't there, and Jenkins can't make a move without John Wiley Price holding his hand."

And now, the dirty version: "Because at that moment, Jenkins didn't have John Wiley Price's hand up his butt."

9. Two more punchlines
Why did Clay Jenkins fall on the ice and break his leg?

"Because he was dizzy from bending over for so long kissing John Wiley Price's butt."

And a clean one for all ages...

"Because John Wiley Price told him to."
