Question for Texas DUers re: Jesus Day in Texas?
Esquire Magazine had A Bush quiz and said that as Governor he declared June 10, 2000 "Jesus Day" in Texas. True? If so, were there any court challenges? Just wondering here in Chicago. Thanks.

3. I've never heard of it
that doesn't mean it doesn't exist -- it just isn't imposed upon us.

4. True story
The shrub Governor did in fact make a proclamation declaring 6/10/2000 "Jesus Day". He kowtowed to "March for Jesus" an Atlanta group that organizes marches and these Jesus proclamations. He hardly got any flack for it, except for people of Jewish faith. He keeps forgetting about the Jews. He's also been quoted somewhere saying that only people who believe in Jesus go to heaven. Despite it being and election year, nothing happened to him.

Only in Texas.

6. It's true

As a result, we hold a National Day of Prayer on the first Thursday of May. On government property. It's open to Christians and anyone else who believes in Judeo-Christianity. It's their way or the highway. I've protested it for a long time.

From a search:

<8/6/00 - NY Times> Four months ago in Texas, Gov. George W. Bush signed a proclamation declaring June 10 to be Jesus Day, and urging all Texans to "follow Christ's example by performing good works in their communities and neighborhoods."

The proclamation received little attention at the time, except for some gratitude from a Christian organization that had asked many governors to issue proclamations supporting its annual day of charity, prayer and parades in Jesus' name.

Now what seemed purely ceremonial has turned into a controversy for Governor Bush. As word of Texas's Jesus Day has spread through e-mail, Jewish newspapers and church-state separationists, the Republican presidential nominee has come under criticism for insensitivity to people of non-Christian faiths and a disregard for the First Amendment.

Any Hispanic named Jesus wouldn't be as valuble to bu$h like the real thing.

Did you see the link above in texaslady's post, to the Snopes Urban Legends site? I think the link above doesn't work so here is another one
http://www.snopes.com/religion/jesusday.htm

Claim: By proclamation of Governor George W. Bush, 10 June 2000 was 'Jesus Day' in Texas.
Status: True.

And they link to a copy of the proclamation at a PBS site since the Governor's office took it off-line.
