A poll to make Bill White happy
http://blogs.chron.com/texaspolitics/archives/2010/04/a_poll_to_make.html

April 19, 2010

A Rasmussen Reports poll out this morning should make Democratic gubernatorial nominee Bill White happy.

Oh, he's still losing to Gov. Rick Perry, the incumbent Republican. But the poll shows Perry with less than 50 percent support and possibly vulnerable to defeat.

And while White's numbers in the poll are about equal to the percentages of some of the top Democratic vote-getters in recent elections, White has reached that point without a heavily financed campaign of comparison with Perry.

And the numbers are: Perry, 48 percent. White, 44 percent.

The big problem for White is Texas voters seem to think Perry is doing as governor. From Rasmussen:

Ten percent (10%) of Texas voters rate the economy as good or excellent. Forty percent (40%) think it's in poor shape.

Thirty-two percent (32%) say the economy is getting better, while 46% believe it's getting worse. Eighteen percent (18%) say it's staying about the same.

John McCain carried Texas over Barack Obama by a 55% to 44% margin in November 2008. Forty-two percent (42%) of voters in the state now approve of the job Obama is performing as president. Approval of Obama is lower in Texas than it is nationally in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll.

Fifty-nine percent (59%) of voters in Texas currently approve of the job Perry is doing as governor, up five points from a month ago. This includes 19% who strongly approve. Forty percent (40%) disapprove of his job performance, including 22% who strongly disapprove.

Coming from conservative Rasmussen, White may even be closer than that. :)

2. Poll: Perry has small lead over White
AAS 4/19/10
Poll: Perry narrowly leads White
State issues alert on possibly rabid puppy

Gov. Rick Perry leads Democratic challenger Bill White 48 percent to 44 percent in a Rasmussen poll released Monday.

The gap between the two candidates is slightly narrower than a month ago, when Perry led by six points.
(snip)
Though the margin between Perry and White is slim, the poll gives Perry a high job approval rate — 59 percent, with 40 percent disapproving of his performance. About 21 percent of those polled said they view White very favorably, while 16 percent said they view him very unfavorably. Perry's very favorable number was 20 percent, with 22 percent viewing him very unfavorably.

I found the positioning of the poll story with the rabid puppy to be funny. Not for the puppy or the new owner in Bryan of course, but just funny that these two stories were in the same article.

Surely that's not a coincidence with Perry's rabid wing nut base.
