Shots fired at Capitol; no injuries reported; man in custody

Authorities are investigating shots fired at the South Steps of the Texas Capitol this afternoon.

Sheriff’s spokesman Roger Wade said a man preliminarily identified as Fausto Cardenas is in custody, but that authorities have not confirmed his name.

DPS spokeswoman Tela Mange said no injuries were reported in the 12:15 p.m. incident. She said the Capitol would remain closed the rest of the day. She said employees who were ordered to stay in their offices were being allowed to leave.

The good thing is no one was injured.

1. Tourists: Don’t turn statehouse into airport
AAS Postcards from the Lege blog 1/22/10
Tourists: Don’t turn statehouse into airport

(snip)
Their single message: Don’t turn the People’s House into an airport checkpoint.

"To make it like getting into an airport would be terrible," said Houston resident Marian Horton. "One of the charms about this capitol is that it is open, accessible, to the people of this state. Turning it into a security area would be a mistake."

(snip)
Clarice Shenault of Houston: "Don’t make this place like an airport. The Capitol belongs to Texans. It’s always been open and should stay that way. There are other ways of getting more security without closing everything to the public."

Chuck Montgomery of Arlington: "There probably are some things that should be done to increase security here, but to install checkpoints and search everyone is not a good idea. They do that at the U.S. Capitol and it’s like Fort Knox. It tells the public: Stay away, don’t come here."

:kick:

Totally agree. But you wait - they will find a way to make it Fort Knox Texas. :grr:
