"People are really surprised to see us sometimes when we show up at the door," Dulce said last week as she and her three classmates at Adamson High School canvassed Oak Cliff streets dressed in "Adelante con Pete Sessions" T-shirts – in English, "Progress with Pete Sessions" – and armed with bilingual handbills touting Mr. Sessions' education, prescription drug benefit and job growth record.
"They're surprised to see Hispanics, young people like us," Jose said. "Some people, they know very little about the Republican Party. Many don't want to hear about it," Dulce said as she passed two houses with Frost campaign signs hammered into their small, manicured front lawns. "But many will listen to us, too."
The students don't work for free. The Sessions campaign pays them the equivalent of $10 an hour plus food, said volunteer organizer Lee Patrida. -snip-
