Dallas goes for 23 days without a single homicide

http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local-beat/Dallas-Sees-Historic-Homicide-Free-23-Days-57940902.html

Dallas police say the city's number of homicides is making history this summer -- but not in a bad way.

Dallas has not seen a homicide in its city limits since Aug. 16 -- 23 days ago. Homicide detectives said they believe it's the longest the city has gone without a homicide in many decades.

"And having talked to people in our unit that have been there more than 40 years; they also cannot recall a time when we've gone 23 straight days -- in particular counting summer, being August leading here into September -- without a homicide," Lt. Craig Miller said.

But overall, homicides in the city are up slightly compared to this last year, so police said they do not know what's behind the current 23-day stretch.

Obviously, there's still room for improvement, but this is encouraging. Hopefully we can push it to 24 before some idiot screws everything up.

1. Keep it going
That is awesome news. Especially in a major urban area.

2. That is completely bizarre.
Because summer is hot, you know, and people get irritable in the summer. Maybe everybody is just lying around at the pool. :D

3. Wow, that's actually pretty amazing
Chief Kunkle has really pushed to change things around in Dallas.

This morning I did hear that DA Watkins caved into pressure from the city council to slash his budget. Sad, that man is doing so much work to free the innocent and the city's after him to help close their budget gap.

5. Well, guess what?
The streak is officially up to 24 days. Took a peek at the Dallas PD's daily offense sheet, and found no homicides of any kind for yesterday. So that means we're up to 24 and counting.

7. Unfortunately, yesterday was the end of the streak
We did have a murder on the 10th, so I think the streak stands at 24 days without a murder in Dallas.

It was a good run, though.

Welcome to DU! :hi:

8. 24 days is still very impressive
I heard them say they couldn't remember any time that it had gone so long.

11. Actually yes I do - think it is a coincidence
Welcome to DU muirfield. :hi:

You obviously take the opposite position. Murders are crimes of passion usually, some premeditated. I think that if a weapon is involved, it usually means the crime will be fatal to someone.

13. While I tend to agree with you, there's more involved than just our gun laws
We have new narcotics treatment programs, a kickass district attorney, lots of Democratic civil and criminal judges, etc.
