Texas jail was an Animal House, authorities say
Source: AP

MONTAGUE, Texas – For months, perhaps longer, the Montague County Jail was "Animal House" meets Mayberry.

Inside the small brick building across from the courthouse, inmates had the run of the place, having sex with their jailer girlfriends, bringing in recliners, taking drugs and chatting on cell phones supplied by friends or guards, according to authorities. They also disabled some of the surveillance cameras and made weapons out of nails.

The doors to two groups of cells didn't lock, but apparently no one tried to escape — perhaps because they had everything they needed inside.

The jailhouse escapades — some of which date to 2006, according to authorities — have rocked Montague (pronounced mahn-TAYG), a farming and ranching town of several hundred people near the Oklahoma line, about 65 miles northwest of Fort Worth......

5. This is the same county where the Henry Lucus debacle started.
Montague, Jack, and Wise counties form a three-county district known for corruption in the district attorney's office and methamphetamine production. A good friend and Jack County deputy often complained loudly that the DA directly interfered in raids on meth labs. The Lucas circus is believed by many to have been cooked up as cover while various agencies destroyed evidence as the DEA closed in.

This story is trivial compared to the regular tales of corruption in Montague county. Two Jack county sheriffs have been busted for cocaine, heroin, and meth distribution. Lovely place to raise your kids. (Which I did.)

7. Maybe it was more economic to make it so nice they didn't want to leave
Rather than paying to guard them 24/7?

Sounds like a solution rather than a problem.

9. You want to talk about an Animal House?
Try TGK down here in Miami. That place is fucking chock a block full of animals, and I'm not even talking about the prisoners. 8 hours in that hell hole was enough to convince to never get arrested again. Then again I shouldn't have been there in the first damn place, but that's another story.

13. Overheard at TGK (during my brief stay there).
Prisoner to guard: When do we get out of here (transported to main jail)?

Guard: When we let you out.

Prisoner to guard: When do we eat?

Guard: When we feed you.

LOL

The guards are a bit surly.

14. Ah man, those guards...
I still can't believe what I saw in there. The total lack of humanity. It was like stepping into an alien world and you're at the mercy of these creatures. You don't know if they're going to snap or what. A fucking riot almost broke out while I was there and it didn't surprise me one bit.

11. Only in Texas could a county be spelled Montague
and pronounced 'mahn-TAYG'. 'Course, here in MI, I live in Macomb County which I've heard network reporters pronounce 'MAY-cum'.
