Former GOP state representative asks Libertarians to drop out of races
AAS 8/03/08
Head of LIbertarian Party asking candidates to 'stand firm' after they were urged not to take votes from Republicans in close contests.

Sunday, August 03, 2008

A former Republican state representative called three Libertarian Party candidates for the state House on Friday to request that they drop out of their races rather than take votes from their Republican opponents.

Suzanna Hupp, who represented District 54 in Central Texas for 10 years, said she made the calls Friday because of concerns that the Libertarian candidates would take Republican votes and ultimately give Democrats control over state and national seats.

"The fact is, we've got redistricting coming up in a few years," said Hupp, from Lampasas, who served in the House from 1997 to 2007, "and if the Republicans lose the (Texas) House of Representatives because there are a handful of people mad at them and vote for the Libertarians instead, then we could be in big trouble at the federal level."

The Democratic candidate in HD-9 (East Texas) is Kenneth D. Franks.

In HD-64 (North Texas), it's John McClelland.

They have already succeeded in convincing the Lib in Valinda Bolton's district to drop out -- likely a few hundred votes, possibly a difference-maker there. There are a certainly a few thousand disaffected voters scattered around Texas who would vote for "neither" R or D, and hell, when there was only a Republican running I have voted for the Libertarian myself.

I think supporting the Libertarians (in spirit and certainly as a means of defeating Republicans) is a worthwhile endeavor.

3. Lib in HD47 race
PDittie where did you find the fact that the Lib in HD47 dropped out? Was there ever a Libertarian in that race? I'm not doubting you, but I guess I never head that the Rs had succeeded in getting that Lib in that race to drop out. I wonder if some promise of some pay back was involved.

Don't you think the Texas A.G. should investigate Hupp on this:
"She said that she couldn't promise me a board seat or some kind of incentive, but that was a possibility," he said.
.

Not that he would mind you - but he really should since there seems to be a promise of exchange a "quid pro quo" illegality in the offer.

4. A political consultant told me
on a back channel. I won't identify him publicly (or privately, for that matter).

Hupp has previously been fined $5700 by the TEC:

Without a doubt, this is illegal conduct. The problem would be proving it.

5. Well the proving it would first have to start with an investigation
Which we both agree Abbott won't touch since he's a partisan hack out to protect his party first.

The proof so far is a he said/she said type of thing. District 9 Libertarian candidate Joe Allport is quoted by the paper stating she was making an offer of a reward if they dropped out. Seems to me that the Texas A.G should be asking both of them some questions under oath.

Libertarians meet with speaker’s staff

By Laylan Copelin | Monday, August 4, 2008, 06:44 PM

Libertarians continue to enjoy overtures from Republicans who, at least in some circles, worry that third-party candidates could be a factor in close races this fall.

Just days after ex-state Rep. Suzanna Hupp, R-Lampasas, urged Libertarians to quit key races, three members of Speaker Tom Craddick’s staff met Monday afternoon with Libertarian leaders.

In the past, Libertarian candidates might only get 5 percent of the vote, but that’s enough to determine the winner in a close legislative contest.

With the House closely split between Republicans and Democrats, a handful of legislative races could affect the partisan outcome and perhaps Craddick’s chances to remain speaker.

The saga continues. This one mentions the Libertarian that dropped out in Valinda's race.

Shouldn't all those republican women voting for Palin help Schick too? I'm hoping right along with you.
