3. it's much harder than it used to be
"back in the day" you read an ad in the paper, called, maybe got an interview. Now you email your resume and never hear anything.

6. We should form a club
Or a support group! My previous-previous employer just had layoffs today, some of my old coworker friends. Sucks that I am not in a position to at least steer them somewhere.

Seriously, are there any places on the web where you can go and hang out on a forum and talk to people in our plight? I was looking for this as well. I would really like somewhere to hang out and vent.

PM me if you know who got it this time. I was amazed to hear last year that tech doc is now down to about 4 people. And no June!

I feel awful for all you guys. Hope you can find something realtively soon. You too, YD!

8. thanks, FSC. I haven't hit the streets yet at least MR YD is pulling in a check
he was heading for a big well project in ND, which is why I was up there last week. We took those lemons and made a little lemonade for ourselves by turning his work commute into a mini vacation. It was a good week!

Now today I cut part of the yard, and have two medical appointments this afternoon. Getting all that done before my benefits expire May 31. Got new contacts, got one of my meds changed and RX ordered, etc.

Tomorrow ..who knows. I may temp for a while.

22. You know, we could think about doing a conference call.
It wouldn't be as much fun but of course it would save gas. I have an account on freeconferencecall.com. They don't give you a toll-free number, but of course if you use your cell phone, the long distance is free. I have found in my experience with conference calls that if *everyone* is on the conference call, it's not a bad experience. The problem comes when only a few people are on the conference call and a few people are in a meeting room, and people don't adhere to good "phone" meeting etiquette, i.e. not talking near the phone, lots of side conversations, etc.

Actually, we could make it an all-Texas thing, if we do a call! :)

14. For those unemployed, or just looking in the DFW area
There are a couple of yahoo groups I would suggest joining.

Focus is generally on IT, but they do post other job leads along with good networking (social) and job-hunting workshops/seminars.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jobleadnetwork/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CareerCare
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AllenJobTransition/

They also have files and other supporting material which is helpful to the pre-employed.

One other thing that people should do is checkout their local professional organizations (example the one above). For instance, Java programmers should check out their local Java Users Group as many have meetings where job leads are announced or recruiters present. Also some have job boards or links to local resources on their sites.

23. Oops, forgot
They have meetings you should attend at least once and get your name signed up.

From there, they will add you to the group. However, most postings are shared between the groups, so the Allen group gets most of them anyway.
