Noriega-McMurrey debate teed up

By W. Gardner Selby | Wednesday, February 6, 2008, 10:52 AM

Democratic U.S. Senate candidates Rick Noriega and Ray McMurrey are penciled in for what is expected to be their only formal face-to-face debate next Wednesday, Feb. 13, on the University of Texas campus. The two are among four Democratic aspirants for the Senate seat held by John Cornyn, R-Texas.

Debate organizer Trey McAtee said Wednesday that the start time will be 8:15 p.m. in Jester A121A.

The debate moderators will be Eileen Smith, a blogger lately based at Texas Monthly, and Karen Brooks, a blog-savvy reporter in the Dallas Morning News Capitol bureau.

:woohoo:

3. This is great news. Noriega will win the debate, of course, and will win the election even if he
somehow doesn't win the debate, but this provides us a great opportunity to get publicity for the race against Cornyn.

Good thing we're finally having this thing, so we can get on the REAL campaign, when Rick Noriega takes out Sen. Box Turtle.

16. This was a great debate last night
Hope some of you caught the streaming video. Good turnout and good responses by the candidates. I thought Rick won it of course, but Ray was a nice person too.

Clean Elections are the core of Ray's platform and I admire that. He took issue with the fact that Rick had not introduced a Clean Elections bill in the Texas House during his term there. Knowing what working in the Lege is like, and knowing this is Texas, I don't think this was fair.

Rick does support campaign finance reform, but let's face it, we're not Maine. A Clean Campaign Finance bill would never see the light of day in the Texas Lege as long as the republicans are in control. The Rs like to be privately financed by James Leininger and Bob Perry. It makes it so much easier for them to answer to 1-2 masters than the whole mass of Texans.

That doesn't mean we give up, it just means it's going to take us a hell of lot longer to get clean Elections there. Clean Elections Texas is gearing up to get a bill introduced in 2009. And I hope that Ray McMurrey and all of his enthusiastic supporters turnout and lobby for Clean Elections then too.

Rick extended his hand in friendship and pledged to work tirelessly to make sure all Texans had a chance for affordable health care.

I'm proud of both men and hope they will work together in the fall to unseat John Cornyn.
