The latest numbers indicate 35 percent more people in Travis County are registered to vote now than four years ago.
"It is, by far, the highest number of any presidential election, in terms of the number of applications that we're receiving this early. We expect this, but we expect it closer to the deadline, not quite in the middle of September," Dolores Lopez, director of the county's voter registration division, said.
Ninety percent of Travis County's voting age population has already registered. Lopez believes the reasons are two-fold.
"The candidates, themselves, bring a lot of attention to the campaigns, to the election itself. And also in Travis County, we have a large number of volunteer deputies that go out to register voters. They've been out to the Austin City Limits Festival. They are just out there doing a heck of a lot of work in this short amount of time," Lopez said.
