New record for favorite registration site
All summer long some of us volunteer registrars have had a table at Guerro's on First Thursdays which has been very successful. Last night GOPisEvil and I registered 45 people there. Thanks Guerro's for donating the space where A4K registered more than 150 voters since June!

I talked with people in another group who had also registered forty or so... they of course knew of others who were also down there last night... when you consider all the folks stalking South Congress with clipboards and a determination to defeat Bush* I wouldn't be surprised if 200 or more people were registered in all.

1. I registered a guy on his first day as a US Citizen!
That made my night! He became a citizen yesterday in San Antonio, and I registered him last night. He volunteered that he is a Democrat, too!!!! :bounce::bounce::party::toast::party::bounce::bounce:

3. My favorite from that location..
... was the Vietnam Vet I registered. When we got to the part of the form where it ask the last county you were registered in, he told me the last time he voted, he voted absentee from Vietnam, but he was definitely voting in this election. He also volunteered he would be voting Democrat.

6. Dayum!
That's a long time. This is the kind of voter who is, like, totally not being captured in polls concentrating on "likely voters." This election will be nothing if not interesting!

Go Texas Blue!

2. Great Job Guys
NoPasaran

Maybe you should add to your list of things to have at your voter registration table, a captive audience standing 10 feet away, waiting in the line for the bar.

That was my favorite table too, I will miss it so.

Seriously, in our brief experience with voter registration, we have done the best where people are gathered or mingling, e.g street fairs. High traffic areas are great, but those people usually have somewhere to go, and are less likely to stop and fill out the form.

8. Movie theaters and bus stops
I don't know that I ever heard a total of how many voters were registered over a few weeks at the Dobie during F911, but folks waiting in line to get tickets are good marks. And bus stops are great, public property and people sitting around bored.

Though having a smidgen of alcohol involved seems helpful :+ ... seems to break down a barrier for some people who might be embarrassed to admit they aren't registered, or have been a bit militant about not registering.

9. One of the interesting things about F911 crowds
Was that some people who insisted they were registered while standing in line to get into the movie decided they'd better fill out a card on their way out!

5. Good on ya! And info on magnetic K-E bumper stickers
OK, now I think I know who you are, NoPasaran... but maybe the guy I know is GOPisEvil... LOL. Congratulations and thanks to both of you and everyone who is making a difference in registering voters.

Since I can't start my own thread yet, I thought this was as good a place as any to mention that I stumbled across a place to get Kerry-Edwards bumperstickers mounted on magnets. I'd been wondering if someone would come out with this, either for folks who don't want to mar their paint jobs or who live somewhere where they might want to remove the bumpersticker in parking lots to keep from getting the car keyed or whatnot.

So, here's the info for anyone who wants to pass it on. I'm not in any way affiliated financially with these folks, just ran across the URL today:
http://www.kerry-edwards-magnets.com/

The magnets have the standard K-E sticker and cost $3.99 plus two bucks shipping.

Embrace peace, visualize victory.

10. Yes, you know me in real life
We chatted at the DFT meetup.

When I look at how the voter registration effort has blossomed in Travis County I am awestruck. I think that I was deputized at the very first Democracy for Texas meetup in April. It was a long summer registering folks in dribs and drabs while finding worthwhile sites and every week another batch of brand-new deputies would join us. Now we an army of hundreds of deputies and can put big groups of us on the street for things like the Lance Armstrong parade or First Thursday and register several hundred people in a few hours. If the rest of our GOTV machinery is up to the task of turning out our vote we should be unstoppable in Travis.
