Princeton Professor Hacks Voting Machines

POSTED: 12:37 am CDT September 14, 2006

TRENTON, N.J. -- A Princeton computer science professor said electronic voting machines made by a company based in Ohio are vulnerable to hacking.

Edward Felten and two students have released a paper on the school's Web site that says they tested a Diebold voting machine. They found ways to quickly upload malicious programs and developed a computer virus able to attack the machines.

A Diebold spokesman said Felten ignored newer software and security measures that prevent such hacking.

The Diebold machine tested by Felten is used across the country along with a newer model.

The professor said better software and voter receipts could help solve the problems.

1. Diebold is the worst software company ever
Avi Rubin was on Air America on Wednesday talking about e-voting machine vulnerabilities. Al Franken said he gets asked bbv questions all the time he travels and speaks to groups. Avi also has a great post on his blog about his personal experiences as an election judge on Monday in Maryland. The electronic poll books are a disaster too. Avi serves on the board of ACCURATE (A Center for Correct, Usable, Reliable, Auditable, and Transparent Elections) http://accurate-voting.org/ He's got links to this study as well

2. I just got around to reading Avi's blog. It's truly pathetic
that no one will know if their vote is counted. If that's the prevailing wisdom, why bother?
I will always vote, but it makes me so mad. And then to reward Diebold for their incompetence
by awarding new contracts to them is beyond belief.

4. That's what they want babylonsister - for us not to vote
So that can never be an option. Your vote really doesn't count when you don't even cast it. Now it's true that your vote can be stolen, but we have to keep voting and fighting for our votes to count.

I have a dream that one day their diabolical vote stealing will be exposed in all its ugliness and we will regain our democracy once again.

One thing I keep wondering is why people who can hack these machines don't hack one for our side. There is one thing that will get the repukes to get behind transparent verifiable elections, and that's having one stolen right back from them.
