Anybody here ever get up to Abilene?
Many of you know I'm writing a book on my Smith family history. The families are in pretty much every state in the union, including Texas, but I never get out to Abilene, and need to find some information.

I desperately need to look for a marriage announcement in the Abilene or Anson newspapers, but the Abilene library won't do lookups. They give you the name of a local genealogist they can recommend, but I have tried calling this woman several times and she does not respond.

There are also no Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness volunteers doing these types of lookups for that area.

I will pay copying costs, parking, whatever, if you are heading that way. PM for details on the wedding if you think you can do it.

Thanks, ya'll

1. Is there a university there?
University libraries might do a search for you, via InterLibrary Loan.

2. It's a thought, but I've found our Rowlett library to be generally
worthless as far as ILL goes. Everything I ask for they tell me they have to pay for. (!!) What's the point of even having a freaking library card to this stupid podunk library.

I may try checking at ACU though. Good thought.

3. If you're just getting photocopies...
you shouldn't have to pay much. I don't have to pay anything, because ILL copy fees are paid for by my department, but I can't imagine the cost is exorbitant. Good luck. I don't live anywhere near Abilene (I live in Norman, OK), otherwise I'd make a run for you.

4. Thanks.
I'm tempted to take a weekend and drive up there myself. I've got a couple other cousins to visit first (in Lufkin and Lampasas) first.

6. I use it through the Godfrey library online.
Unfortunately, its information is very limited. Very few cities I need are represented, and the newspapers that are do not have the ancestors in them.

Godfrey used to have a much better newspaper archive. The search function in this one is a crapshoot. I hate it.

Thanks, though.
