The loss of funding and staff would cause a "dramatic" drop _ nearly $2 billion _ in child support collections, Abbott said. His office's budget request for 2008-09 appealed for state lawmakers to fill the funding gap.
"The child support program must rely on the Legislature to come to the aid of Texas families to protect children from the dire consequences cuts of this magnitude will bring," Abbott said.
The federal Deficit Reduction Act passed in February could cost the state $196.6 million in federal funds for child support enforcement.</snip>
