Common ground: Trans Texas Corridor
Edited on Mon Aug-14-06 10:23 PM by Horse with no Name
I was at my brother's house today--who is a Republican.
Not nearly as AVID fan, but still one nonetheless.
Anyway, on his refrigerator magnet there was a flyer talking about how to oppose the Trans Texas Corrider.
He and his wife both oppose this vehemently, and it was the first common ground we have had politically in quite some time.
I advised them to write their congressmen.
I even told them it was time to think about hitting the streets with their friends to oppose this. And for the first time, they didn't laugh at me.

Does anyone have any reallly good literature on this so that I can pass it along?

1. The message - how to beat the TTC
The way to stop the TTC is to fire every incumbent in the statewide elections in November. This needs to be the message, repeated over and over. Get rid of every incumbent. They're all part of Rick Perry's team. Vote them all out of office. When the voters fire all of them, the TTC will be dead. Make this the message, over and over.

3. The only Republicans I've discussed this with...
don't seem to care much one way or another.

Apparently they're part of that complacent, careless 33%.

Good to know there's hope. :)

4. If they won't vote Bell, tell them to vote anyone but Perry because c4n3p
and Kinky and Bell all oppose the TTC.

While it is CURRENTLY true that Bell, Strayhorn, and Kinky all three oppose the TTC, voters deeply committed to stopping the TTC should know that Strayhorn was apparently FOR the TTC before she changed parties (http://anyonebutc4n3p.blogspot.com/2006/06/abilene-news-lists-c4n3ps-flip-flops.html) and Kinky flip-flops on every other issue so it should come as no surprise if he flip-flops on the TTC in the future (http://stopkinky.blogspot.com/2006/08/kinky-flip-flops-again-on-immigration.html, http://stopkinky.blogspot.com/2006/07/kinky-is-both-for-and-against-death.html, http://stopkinky.blogspot.com/2006/04/kinky-talks-out-of-both-sides-of-his.html).

In summary, Bell is best on TTC and anyone deeply committed to this issue should vote Bell, but "anyone but Perry" may have to serve as the fall back message for Kool-Aid drinking Republicans.

6. Over the weekend I was in rural Bell County
And I saw a lot of 4ft X 6ft Strayhorn signs. I know this is a strong Republican area, and my guess is that the Strayhorn support is a direct result of the TTC issue. I really wonder if Perry can carry any of the counties in the TTC disaster area.

5. the texdot TTC meeting in my little county almost turned into a riot
In February 2005, when the Trans Texas Corridor was first brought to the public's attention, TxDot held a show and tell at the local civic center. Lots of charts and maps. At this time the actual right of way of the proposed project was wide open - starting on the Red River somewhere between Montague and Fannin Counties and going South to Mexico. Details to be released later. Maybe twenty people showed up.

Then in July of 2006 TxDot held the second public meeting at the civic center. Now they have charts and maps of the 1200-foot wide Trans Texas Corridor going through the part of my little county where all the rich people have their horse farms and lakefront property. A thousand people showed up at this meeting all wailing and gnashing their teeth. The fire marshall had to turn hundreds away. Lots of DPS officers patrolled the scene.

TxDot held another meeting a few days later at bigger facility. The TxDot moderator guy had trouble speaking English. The crowd couldn't follow his foreign acccent and gave him lots of flak. 98 citizens spoke out against the corridor and 3 were for it.

The minions of Carol FourNames had a table set up out front.

My little county went about 78% for Goodhair Perry in the last election. When the people finally figure out that Goodhair is behind this deal, he won't get 10% of the vote.
