*In March 2006, the South Dakota legislature banned all abortions in the state, except those necessary to save the life of the mother (no exceptions for victims of rape or incest). Ms. Fire Thunder at that time was the elected President of the Oglala Sioux Nation on the Pine Ridge Reservation. She vowed to open a clinic on tribal lands to provide a wide range of family planning and health services including counseling for victims of domestic violence, abortions, and contraceptives. But in May, the Oglala Sioux Tribal Council voted to ban all abortions on the reservation (no exceptions at all) and voted to suspend Fire Thunder as President. On June 29, Fire Thunder was impeached and removed as tribal President because of her outspoken support of reproductive freedom for women of the Oglala Sioux Nation and all women of South Dakota. ROADwomen join many other supporters of reproductive freedom in honoring Cecilia Fire Thunder’s courage and convictions.
